Volkswagen Passat 1.8 TSI (DSG) Review
Larger than life

The new generation Passat makes for an even better overall package than before even though it looks rather like he old car inside and out.

Introduction, styling

The Passat CC has been a double-edged sword for Volkswagen. It offered style and character that no other four-door Volkswagen model, current or previous has ever had but at the same time, the CC's beauty and hence, its popularity meant that the regular Passat has failed to garner significant buyer interest since the introduction of its sleeker looking sibling. The CC, after all offered more style and presence with just a slight compromise in rear accommodation so it's not hard to see its appeal over the more conventional but more practical regular Passat.

Volkswagen has recently introduced a new Passat to revive its mid-sized saloon's fortunes. Outwardly, the new model looks rather similar to the car it replaces but according to Volkswagen, the only common exterior body panel between the two is the roof, which is a bit hard to believe when the new car looks so strikingly similar to its predecessor. Look closer though and you'll notice the new details on each of the exterior sheet metal - these might be minor detail changes like the new crease that runs the entire sides of the car.

The logic behind the design of the new Passat is rather similar to what Volkswagen's designers did with the Golf in its transition from Mk 5 to Mk 6 two years ago which is to graft on the brand's latest ‘slim radiator grille' corporate face, give the sides of the car a more three-dimensional feel with the creases while retaining the familiar basic silhouette and side profile of the previous model, making the new car look unmistakably Passat in the process. The Passat follows the Phaeton by having four horizontal louvres for the radiator grille, while other models in the VW model range only have two slats on their grilles.

The Passat's new face certainly has a more thrusting look than its predecessor's but the Touran style tail lamps and hence, the Passat's rump somehow don't look as sophisticated as the old model's. The new Passat isn't exactly the most handsome looking saloon car in its class - a Passat CC is still prettier while a Citroen C5 has more charisma in the way it looks, but like the Golf, it has proven once again how timeless Volkswagen exterior designs can be. As previously, a Variant estate body style can also be had in addition to the four-door saloon.
