With the new topless CC, Renault has added some sex appeal to the Megane range. Raymond finds out if the new Megane CC has the brains to match its brawn.

Introduction, styling

Only the well heeled will know that Renault has a strong lineage of topless models that date back in the 1960s with the iconic Floride, a simple convertible model based on the Caravelle saloon. The Floride, undoubtedly Renault's most iconic topless model, was driven by a number of stars during its heyday, including one Brigitte Bardot.

Today's Megane Coupe-Cabriolet can be considered to be the Floride's spiritual successor, which means it has big shoes to fill. The latest generation Megane CC is the third topless Megane model and the second to offer a folding metal hardtop.

The last generation Megane CC has been around since 2004 - that's over seven years ago, which is an eternity for a car. Towards the end of its life, the first generation Megane CC found itself to be truly outclassed in many departments by most of its rivals out there. The new model then, should be able to restore some Gallic pride in the crowded coupe-convertible market.

Style is of utmost importance when it comes to coupes and convertibles. It doesn't matter what badge it has or how cramped it is inside, the coupe or its topless equivalent just has to ooze style and be able to strike a pose. The Megane CC does deliver in this aspect.

Fat rumps are what four-seater hardtop convertibles usually suffer from due to the need for space at the rear to store the retracted roof and its mechanism. Conjure up cars like the Peugeot 307CC and you'll know where I'm getting at. The new Renaiult Coupe-Convertible though, is one of the rare ones that do very well to hide its sizable rump. Roof up or down, it looks elegantly proportionate while the steeply raked windscreen with Audi-style aluminium coloured A-pillars and sporty snout give it a purposeful stance.

Like its predecessor, the CC's hardtop features a glass roof so that sunshine lovers can enjoy a tad more sun and a view of the sky even when the roof is up. With just a press of a button situated on the centre console, it'll take just 21 seconds for the hydraulics and electrics to fold and stow away the two-piece roof into the boot to transform the Megane CC from a coupe to cabriolet, which means it'll take a second longer than the Peugeot 308CC and a second faster the old Megane CC will take to transform themselves into cabriolets. A thoughtful feature in the Megane is the fixed glass wind deflector behind the rear seats. Renault says that the deflector reduces wind noise and turbulence at speeds of up to 90km/h with four occupants on board.
