McLaren 12C Coupe Review
Mad Mac

If you grew up in the 90s like me, you would remember fondly how the automotive world was raving about Gordon Murray’s ultimate creation back then. The McLaren F1 was the 90s teenager’s bedroom poster that superseded the Countach of the 80s. Ok, maybe not but for me personally, I made a ton of scrapbooks with pictures I ‘borrowed’ from copies of my older brother’s ‘Car and Driver’ magazines.

So yes, you could say my love affair with the Mac started pretty early. But more importantly the F1 was significant because it set the standard for future road cars from the Woking manufacturer. GM was fastidious in his pursuit for the perfect supercar and he made little to no compromises to that end.

And that pursuit started from the ground up with the first being the driving position. Unique only to the F1, it has a three seat layout with the driver sitting on the vehicle’s centerline. The driver’s seat is set slightly forward of the two passenger seats for the best visibility and one can only assume each passenger seat is there for each of your model girlfriends.

The F1 was also the first production sports car to feature an all carbon fibre body which was still unique to the F1 circuit at the time. But the focus has to be the naturally aspirated V12 powerplant which BMW M division built. The engine was an engineering marvel in itself. Weighing in at just 266 kilograms, the S70/2 as it was codenamed produced 627bhp from its 6.1 litre capacity. And although it was 16 kilos over what GM specified, it produced 14% more power.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
