It looks uncannily similar to the car it replaces so then, what’s new about the new Suzuki Swift. Raymond Lai finds out.

Introduction, styling

Car makers are a rather predictable bunch - when it comes to replacing a model that has been hugely successful for the brand in its last incarnation, the new generation model will typically look very much the same as its predcessor with most of the improvements focused on other aspects of the car like its drivability, interior, refinement etc. The Volkswagen Golf has been one of the greatest examples of this ‘if it ain't broke, don't fix it' philosophy. Other cases in point include the Honda Jazz as well as recent generations of the venerable Toyota Corolla Altis.

The latest model to join the abovementioned list is the new, fourth generation Suzuki Swift. The last generation has been a roaring success for Suzuki around the world since its debut seven years ago in 2004. Together with the Honda Jazz, the Swift is the compact hatchback of choice for many Singaporean car buyers. While the Jazz's strengths has always lie in its utility and practicality, the Swift has always appealed to those who are looking at a compact hatch that is more engaging to drive and more refined. Moreover, the Swift has always been more affordable than the Jazz, which is a rather important factor for many buyers of such cars. With the outgoing Swift garnering so many fans and owners over the past seven years, it'll be interesting to discover how Suzuki can further improve its best selling model.

Outwardly, the new model looks rather familiar indeed - the overall silehouette and styling features of the new car are pretty much similar to its popular predecessor. It is still that familiar Swift face up front and you'd have to squint to notice the new, wider radiator grille and the curvier upswept headlamps. Along the flanks, it's the hardest to note that this is the new model even though at 3850mm in length, it is almost 100mm longer than its 3755mm predecessor. Correspondingly, wheelbase on the new car is up to 2430mm from 2390mm. While the height of the new model is similar to its predecessor's, the former is 5mm wider than the old Swift. At the rear, the tail lamps have been enlarged and just like the headlamps, are curvier while the numberplate surround on the bumper is larger. The cut out for the latter apes the one on the previous Renault Megane hatchback and hence makes the Swift's rump look a tad clumsy and fat when compared to the old model's backside.

The styling of the outgoing third generation model was highly lauded around the world, so much so that Skoda's designers somewhat adopted some of the Swift's styling features and proportions for the second generation Fabia. The new Swift's looks are an evolution of the old model's, which does give it an identity that is unmistakably Swift on the outside.
