When you find yourself shopping for an MPV, its appearance is the last thing on your mind. The MPV is one of the most functional categories of automobiles out there. Even so, Honda granted us a sweet reprieve from the hum drum of box on wheels MPVs with their last two generations of the Odyssey.
Not only were they a looker, the handling also benefitted from the lower stance which made driving an MPV a little easier on those trading up or down (depending on whose view point: wife or hubby) from their Evos and WRXes.
Exterior
The Odyssey is no longer the sleek low-down sled we used to love but has grown in overall height and size. Going back to its stereotypical MPV outline, the new car appears much like the rest of the MPVs currently offered by Toyota and Nissan.
But the new car still makes an impression with its cyborg front end that reminds one of Michael Bay’s transformers. The sleek front end hides little of the gently raked A-pillars that now lead to a much taller roofline that’s 150mm taller than before.
While the designers have given the side profile some feature lines to distract from its taller profile, it does little to distinguish it from other MPVs.
Round the back, you can see some resemblance to the previous generation’s tail lights though the ones here are full LED strips that give a distinctive glow at night.
Even though Honda had good reason for discarding the sleek design of previous generations, we can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness for the Odyssey losing its unique styling in a sea of rectangular people movers.
