Soccer moms generally refer to mothers who spend a large amount of their time transporting their children to and from school as well as to their sporting events and other activities. The ride of choice for soccer moms then, is usually big MPVs or SUVs like the Volvo XC90 and Honda Odyssey.
Above all the typical soccer mom rides, one of the most outstanding and most popular vehicles, especially in the UK, is the Land Rover Discovery. In three previous generations, the Discovery, lovingly known as the Disco has been the ride of choice of soccer moms who do school runs daily thanks to its go anywhere attitude and indestructible nature as well as its versatile and practical interior.
Despite its undoubted popularity elsewhere, the Disco has not been exactly an obvious choice among Singaporean soccer moms. This could be due to the fact that the Disco was never available with a smaller, tax friendly engine in the past.
The Disco 3 in recent years for example, had all the right ingredients to be a soccer mom's favourite over here but it came only with a big and thirsty V8 motor. With the recently introduced Discovery 4 though, Land Rover dealer Wearnes Automotive decided to offer the latest generation Disco with a much smaller and significantly less thirsty 3-litre turbodiesel engine rather than a big and thirsty V8 petrol. Giving the Disco diesel power has its obvious advantages - it is more fuel economical and its high torque characteristics suit a large and heavy off-roader like the big Land Rover. There's one big downside to diesels in Singapore though - the authorities law on slapping the somewhat unreasonable diesel passenger car tax on each diesel vehicle registered as a passenger car in Singapore.
On the outside, the fourth generation Discovery looks largely similar to its predecessor despite Land Rover's claims that it is an all-new model altogether. Squint a little and the new model can be recognized by its slightly softer nose treatment that is more akin to its Range Rover brethren's and a more aerodynamic bumper which means the Disco's Tonka Toy looks upfront are somewhat less chiseled and less right angled than before. The nose has also taken up a bit of class and elegance rather than as utilitarian looking as previously as the upright radiator grille and headlamps now have a somewhat ‘bling' look and feel about them. The rear of the new car can be singled out by its new LED Tail lamps and slightly less chiseled edges to match the new nose.
Thankfully though, the Disco's unmistakable upright silhouette, complete with the slightly raised roofline towards the rear is retained. All in all, the newer model's exterior adds a dose of class and prestige to the Disco's usual workhorse attitude.
