Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TFSI quattro Review
Sexy back

The A7 is a big stylish hatchback that is more than a match for the Mercedes CLS when it comes to style. Raymond Lai finds out if there is anything not to like about the A7 Sportback.

Introduction, styling

Back in the early seventies and early eighties, British cars were pretty much a common sight on our roads. Among the Cortinas, Allegros and Granadas was an exceptional looking car. The car I'm talking about here is the Rover SD1. The SD1 was an iconic design even though its front end styling was a copy of the brilliant Ferrari Daytona.

The silhouette or profile of Audi's new stylish number, the A7 Sportback, somehow manages to look the same as the Rover SD1's but there's where the similarities end though. Look into the styling details and the A7 is just pure Audi - the upward kink on the rear quarter window for example, is an obvious homage to the iconic 100S Coupe while the tornado line running along the flanks and the two thirds sheetmatal, one third window proportion along the sides are evident.

From any angle, the A7 Sportback looks nothing short of sleek and stylish. From the thrusting face that is shared with the upcoming new A6 to the steeply raked windscreen and flowing roofline, the A7 Sportback oozes class and style. The rear, with its gently sloping rear hatch, LED tail lamps and retractable rear spoiler just looks evocative and sexy.

Compared to the A6 saloon that the A7 is based on, the latter is a significant 54mm longer overall, 37mm wider and 35mm lower while the wheelbase is extended by just 2mm. Despite the more generous dimensions over the A6 saloon, the A7 Sportback looks well proportioned and rather purposeful in its stance.

As its name suggests, the A7 Sportback sits between the A6 and the A8 in the Audi range while the Sportback moniker basically means it has a rear hatch instead if a boot lid at the rear. The A7 Sportback follows in the steps of the successful A5 Sportback to become Audi's second saloon/coupe hybrid model. The A5 and A7 Sportback bring a new twist to the four-door coupe concept that was pioneered by the original Mercedes-Benz CLS back in 2003 - they have the added practicality of a hatchback. Audi says that the A7 is all about emotive design and it is certainly not wrong in its description.

Two variants are offered for Singapore - a base 2.8 FSI quattro and the 3.0 TFSI quattro. The range topping 3.0TFSI can immediately be distinguished on the outside by its standard S-line aerodynamic kit and five spoke ‘Y' design 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/40 R19 tyres. The car pictured here is running on optional 20-inch Audi Exclusive 5-segment spoke design wheels shod with 285/35 R20 rubber which look the part and fill the A7's wheel arches really well indeed.
