Story by Raymond Lai in Abu Dhabi Photos by Audi

The new generation Audi A6 is set to enter the hugely fearsome E-Class and 5 Series foray next month. Raymond Lai previews it in Abu Dhabi.

Introduction, styling

Although Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE, it is only the second largest city in the Emirates after Dubai. In past decades though, the richer in oil reserves Abu Dhabi has been behind Dubai when it comes to joining the likes of New York and London in becoming one of the world's most outstanding cities. After all, Dubai has icons like the Burj Al Arab Hotel, the Palm and World Islands as well as the world's tallest building in its landscape. In recent times though, Abu Dhabi has upped its ante to take the limelight away from Dubai. There's now fierce competition between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to be the UAE's top dog city.

The battle in the executive car sector here in Singapore is pretty much akin to the fierce competition between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For so long now, the class is dominated by the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class which can be considered to be the Dubais of the class while the Abu Dhabi in this context, is the up and coming Audi A6. It is then pretty much apt that we've come to Abu Dhabi's Yas Island to preview the new generation A6.

Although the A6 is one of the best selling executive saloons in the world, with over seven million units sold since it was first called the 100, it somehow isn't as popular as the 5 or the E-Class here in Singapore. The new model though, aims to change all this as Audi hopes that it'll compete more convincingly with its German competitors. Audi Singapore says that the new A6 will play an important role for further sales growth here this year.

Bulking the trend of its competitors, the new A6's exterior dimensions are more compact than its predecessor - not significantly more compact, just 12mm shorter but the wheelbase has increased by 69mm. Making the A6 more compact means the engineers can more successfully reduce weight. According to Audi, depending on the version, the new A6 is as much as 80kg lighter than the previous model. 20 percent of the car's body shell is made from aluminium and this hybrid aluminium construction has yielded a 15 percent weight saving over a conventional all-steel body as favoured in the industry says Audi. Lightweight technology and construction then is one of the new A6's biggest fortes.

Well, another major forte of the new model is also the way it looks. At first glance or from pictures, many will say that the A6 looks either like a scaled down A8 or a scaled up A4. Spend a few extra moments looking at it in the flesh and you will start to appreciate its sporty yet elegant proportions and your eyes will be drawn to the intricate exterior detailing.

Along the flanks, the distinctive lines, together with the low roofline and long bonnet, create a dynamic impression. Up front, the A6, with its distinctive headlamps and latest iteration of the single-frame grille, shares much of its nose with the recent A7 Sportback. There are some obvious references to its predecessor, most obviously in the area of the C-pillar while the rear has a bit of last generation D3 A8 in the overall profile of the boot line when seen directly from the rear. The relatively short front overhang further adds to the A6's dynamic stance and play an important part in giving the A6 is handsome proportions. In terms of styling, the A6 athletic stance definitely gives it a much sportier look than its two closest competitors - the 5 Series and the E-Class.
