Hyundai Genesis Grand 3.8 GDI Review
Genesis rising...

Introduction, Exterior

The Genesis represents Hyundai’s most focused assault on the luxury market yet. And its aim is obvious, take a bite out of the luxury pie that’s currently being shared by Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus. But question lies in not just the product but the public’s perception of a brand that has only been associated with economy models so far.

That echoes the underdog status that Lexus once shared in 1990 with the LS400 when it too was trying to break into a luxury market filled with European makes. While it took time to turn brand snobs around to the LS, that exercise has only proven you can’t keep a good thing down.

From the outside the Genesis certainly carries its message of luxury, power and refinement well. Hyundai’s designers weren’t shy about taking the best design elements of their competition and incorporating it into their car. While this approach can sometimes cause the end product to appear tacky and uninspiring, the Genesis pulls it off brilliantly and wears its new Fluidic Design language well.

The Genesis cuts an imposing stance and will hold its own next to a Lexus LS. At nearly five metres in length, it dwarfs most of the luxury models that it is price bracketed with. Its wide shoulders and bold shoulder line gives it the road presence one looks for in a large luxury sedan.

The gaping chrome grille makes a powerful impression. And the suite of LED headlights and daytime running lights give the car a modern touch. Round the back the trunk is equally large and as wide as the bonnet and hides a sizable boot beneath. Chrome tail pipes complete the imposing image that this large Korean sedan exudes.
