The C-Class loses two doors and lowers its roofline to transform itself into a stylish coupe. Raymond Lai checks out if it offers the substance to match its newly-found style.

Introduction, styling

Mercedes-Benz has an illustrious history when it comes to four-seater coupes. In recent times, models like the SLC, SEC and latterly the CL have represented the Three-pointed Star in the upper end of the four-seater coupe sector while the middle class has been represented by several generations of the CE and CLK-class coupes.

The end of the CLK’s bloodline in 2009 heralded the return of an E-Class badged coupe model. Before the E-Class coupe, the last time Mercedes had an E-Class badged coupe was with the W124 CE models. While many considered the E-Class coupe, launched in 2009 to be the successor of the discontinued CLK, the recently launched new C-Class coupe is closer to the latter in terms of size and positioning. With the new, more affordable C-Class coupe, Mercedes-Benz now offers a two-door model to compete head-to-head with the popular BMW 3 Series coupe.

Style and the ability to strike a pose are high on the list of priorities for a coupe and the C-Class coupe certainly delivers in these aspects. The coupe’s looks are inevitably based on the recently updated C-Class saloon’s but the lower and more gently sloping roofline certainly gives it a more expressive and dynamic character. Compared to the saloon, the coupe is 39mm lower and 1mm shorter while running on the same wheelbase and track. Despite sharing many similarities with the saloon, the C-Class coupe’s short front overhang, long bonnet and other styling features are typical of a traditional coupe’s.

Admittedly, the two-door C-Class doesn’t show off its style and elegance like the bigger and more expensive E-Class coupe can and it doesn’t even come with the latter’s or the CL’s frameless doors and lack of B-pillars. The C-Class coupe is still a very stylish machine nonetheless, thanks to its elegant proportions and sweeping roofline.

In mid-range C250 CGI form, the C-Class coupe’s stance is far from being sporty or aggressive like with the AMG variants but it does look purposeful for a two-door model. The C250 comes with HID headlamps with LED indicators as well as 17-inch alloys as standard while an AMG sports package aero kit will be an $8k option. The latter will add further purposefulness to the C-Class coupe’s stance and is definitely a worthy option. The C63 Black Series model has proved how angry and aggressive looking the C-Class coupe can be if adorned with blistered wheel arches, big wheels and deep spoilers.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
