Porsche Cayman R PDK Review
Captain Cayman

The R is the lightened, powered up and more hardcore model in the Cayman range. Raymond Lai checks out just how ‘R’ is the Cayman R.

Introduction, styling

‘R’ is probably the most widely used moniker in the auto world if you want to name a high performance model. There are the various hot Type R models from Honda. Jaguar names its hot XF and XK models the XFR and the XKR respectively. There’s the Volkswagen Golf R and Scirocco R and Seat’s high performance Leon model is the Cupra R.

For Porsche, the alphabet ‘R’ has always been synonymous with the 911R from the 1960s. The 911R can be considered to be the first race bred 911 model as it was a lightened 911 model made for racing homologation. With Porsche’s racing 911 models now based on the 911 GT3 RS, there isn’t a road going 911R in the Porsche line-up these days. The ‘R’ moniker though was recently revived for the sportier, lightened, faster and more hardcore version of the Cayman.

The Cayman is probably the most well balanced mid-engined sports car among its competitors. For the R, Porsche has taken a Cayman S as a base, stripped it of unnecessary weight, lightened it by as much as 55kg, added 10bhp to the S’ horsepower count and gave it retuned and lowered sports suspension. The result is a Cayman variant that corners and goes faster than the S says Porsche.

Outwardly, the R can be distinguished from lesser Cayman models via the ultra lightweight 19-inch Boxster Spyder wheels (not fitted on the car here), the 20mm lowered stance, the fixed rear spoiler finished in satin black, the black accents around the headlamps, black wing mirror housings as well as the retro looking ‘Porsche’ stripes. Porsche says that the latter is inspired by those on their old race cars from the 1960s and 1970s rather than the model name stripes that are on the Carrera RS 2.7 as well as today’s GT3 RS models.

Without the lightweight Boxster Spyder wheels and in nondescript Carrera White shade, it’ll take a Porsche aficionado to really notice that the car in the pictures here is the R. If we were to spec our own Cayman R, we’d have it in the bespoke Cayman R only colour of Peridot green with the Boxster Spyder wheels fitted.
