BMW 2 Series 220i Coupe Sport Review
1 becomes 2

Introduction, Exterior

BMW is continuing with the trend of re-organizing their sporting models into even model numbers and the current 2 series is the product of that shuffle. Though not to be confused with the front wheel drive (BMW’s first) 2-series Active Tourer we drove not too long ago.

This 2-series is more a re-styling of the current 1-series hatchback into a coupe style and sort of a reincarnation of the previous 1-series coupe. Confused? We don’t blame ya. But just think of what the 4-series did for the 3-series though you’ll have to ignore the 4-series Gran Coupe that followed later. I know it’s all getting a bit confusing lately but the Germans are on a blitz to fill every motoring niche possible.

Based on the 1-series hatchback, the 2-series harks back to the good old days of the compact E30 3-series that were a giggle to drive with their light bodies and modest dimensions. And the 220i has that spot on. Compared to the hatchback, the coupe is a handsome rendition of the former. Sharp contrasting lines create an arresting front fascia while a horizontal shoulder softens into a pert rear end.

It is a compact but athletic body that hints at great potential underneath. Although paired with modest 17-inch alloys, they seem to fill the wheel well adequately. Size wise the car’s overall length of 4,432mm is 108mm more than the 1-series hatch and 72mm longer than the 1-series coupe it replaces. This translates to more space and stability for what is still a modestly sized coupe.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
