With the introduction of the Sharan and the refreshed Galaxy, choices in the large MPV market are no longer just Japanese.

When it comes the large MPVs, choices in the market were mostly Japanese in the past thanks to popular models like the Honda Odyssey, Mazda8 and Toyota Previa/Estima among others. The European brands’ existence in the sector was next to nothing after the discontinuation of the Renault Espace.

Last year, Ford became the first European brand to introduce a large MPV model since the Renault Espace in the form of the Galaxy. The Galaxy proved to be a strong alternative and competitor to the Japanese models and earlier this year, Ford introduced the updated version of the Galaxy with a more powerful and more efficient drivetrain, making the Galaxy a serious contender in the large MPV class. Just when Ford thought that the Galaxy had it on its own as the only European large MPV on sale here, along comes a competitor in the form of an old foe in the form of the Volkswagen Sharan.

The Galaxy and the Sharan have an interesting history between them of course – the first generation Galaxy was actually the same car as the first generation Sharan bar minor differences in exterior details and badges. Both models were even made in the same VW factory in Portugal. This time round though, the Sharan and the Galaxy couldn’t be more different from each other.

Outwardly, the Galaxy is yet another Blue Oval that embodies Ford’s current styling language that is also featured on the S-Max. Mondeo, Fiesta and the upcoming new generation Focus.  Dubbed ‘Kinetic’ design, the look has the right mix of aggression, dynamism and elegance. The recently updated Galaxy not only featured a more efficient drivetrain but also minor cosmetic changes to the exterior. The updated model features a redesigned frontal section with a new, more sculpted bonnet, a bolder trapezoidal grille with inserts featuring subtle chrome bars, new fog and headlamps as well as a new radiator grille. At the rear, there are new, distinctive LED tail lamps. The changes on the new car are more subtle than those on the updated S-Max but they are at least sufficient to easily distinguish the newer Galaxy than the old. All in all, the Galaxy’s looks aren’t as dynamic or sporty as the S-Max’s but it is not staid and boxy like some MPVs are.

At 4820mm long, the Galaxy is Huge with a capital H if not as huge as the 4854mm long Sharan, but Ford’s designers have done well to eliminate its visual bulk from the front and rear. Like many large MPVs these days, the windscreen area is large and steeply raked. It’s hard to deny the fact that the Galaxy is very tall from the sides though.

Like its Touran little brother, the new Sharan’s styling is well, a tad unimaginative and dare I say, predictable and boring. The Sharan looks most distinctive from the front thank to its Volkswagen corporate nose with its slim radiator grille and headlamps featuring intricate LED bulbs for daytime running lights. But it all looks staid and boxy along the flanks and upright rear. Park the Sharan next to the Galaxy and the latter will look almost adventurous in its styling in comparison, Blame it on the German’s obsession of maximizing the use of interior space in an MPV – square exterior equates to more cabin room after all.
