Audi A6 C7 Sedan 2.8 FSI mu Review
Smooth operator

Having a V6 powered 2.8-litre variant as the entry-level model isn’t exactly ideal for the new Audi A6 but it certainly looks good inside and out and is a smooth operator as Raymond Lai found out.

Introduction, styling

High COE prices these days have meant that luxury executive saloon models like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class are dominating the local sales charts. BMW and Mercedes-Benz’s other German rival Audi obviously intends to eat into the 5 and E-Class’s pie with its recently launched new generation A6.

It’s a rather unenviable task for the A6 to surpass and beat the well-established 5 Series and E-Class in the local sales charts but the new generation C7 A6 certainly has the mantle to take the fight to its competitors, judging by the brief drive that we had in it in Abu Dhabi back in June.

The new A6 is now finally here and it’s all ready to enter the executive car fray to do battle with the 5 and the E-Class, well, except that there’s no sub-2-litre entry level A6 variant just yet. A sub-2-litre model is certainly essential for the A6 in an engine size conscious market like Singapore. For now though, the base model A6 for Singapore is the 2.8 FSI multitronic variant. This model supplements the 3.0 TFSI quattro variant in the range, with the 2.0 TFSI variant only available in a few months time.

Thanks to its well-honed proportions and neat styling details, the C7 A6 is a good-looking saloon car indeed. Admittedly, many will say that the A6 looks either like a scaled down A8 or a scaled up A4 at first glance but look closer and you’ll start to notice that the A6 has its own visual character, especially up front where the nose features the latest iteration of Audi’s corporate face as seen on the A7 Sportback and the updated A5.

Along the flanks, the distinctive lines, together with the low roofline and long bonnet, create a dynamic impression. The relatively short front overhang further adds to the A6’s dynamic stance and play an important part in giving the A6 its handsome proportions. It is at the rear where the A6’s looks are at its least convincing – look at it directly from the rear and this is where the A6 arguably looks like its A8 or A4 sibling most.

The base 2.8 FSI model can immediately be recognized on the outside by its lack of the 3.0 TFSI’s S-line aero kit, 18 instead of 19-inch alloy wheels as well as the 2.8 badge on the boot lid. In terms of styling, the A6’s purposeful stance definitely gives it a much more dynamic look than its two closest competitors – the 5 Series and the E-Class. Compared to the latter, the A6’s styling should also prove to be more timeless over its lifetime.
