Since the unrelenting rise of COE premiums, local distributors have been forced to spec their cars with ever higher options to help consumers make sense of the extra cost of cars here. These days, a Japanese sedan is so well-equipped that they hardly differ in features to a continental. The only real division between continental and Japanese makes now is brand loyalty and personal preference.

At first glance, the subtle exterior changes to the Mazda 6 are easily missed but a closer inspection reveals the new grille that features a ‘wing’ element which extends into the new headlights. The model is also the first to feature the new Mazda Adaptive LED Headlights that are significantly brighter and gives the new car a distinctive nocturnal signature. A redesigned lower bumper further enhances the iconic streamlined Kodo design philosophy.

Compared to the competition in this segment, the 6 is the most stunning to look at and exudes an athletic grace with its smooth flowing lines. Its design reflects that of a sleek sexy coupe more than its four door sedan classification suggests.

And like a sports coupe, the car hides a revvy 2.5-litre inline four cylinder under the bonnet that churns out 189bhp. Like the previous Mazda 6, this sporty powerplant rewards with a heavy throttle input where torque comes in from 3,250 with 256Nm accompanied with an inspiringly throaty rumble under the bonnet.
