An end to premium cars in Cat A?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past quarter, the local automotive industry has been hit with yet another seismic regulation change. Announced last September, the government will implement a cap on horsepower for cars in the below 1,600cc category of the COE also known as Cat A from next month onwards.

This was seen as a move by the government to end the dominance of premium cars in the Cat A market that has seemingly pushed out the Japanese makes in the past few years. Where premium makes like BMW and Mercedes-Benz introduced 1.6-liter turbocharged models that competed directly for the limited COE quotas with other bread and butter cars.

But with the new ruling where the categorization takes into account the horsepower, most of the premium brands will see their models back in the Cat B (above 1,600cc) market with the 130bhp cap on engine power. From the list provided by the LTA that shows the cars that will remain in Cat A under the new ruling, you can see that both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been completely pushed out of it with only Audi remaining.

However, zee Germans are unperturbed by this latest development. Audi is the first to launch their new models as a direct response to the new COE re-categorisation. Just last week, the German brand unveiled their latest A3 sedan that will feature a 1.4-litre 122bhp powerplant that comes in just under the 130bhp

During the launch, Jeff Mannering, the Managing Director for Audi Singapore proudly proclaimed that “With this car, I'm claiming today Audi already has the lead in the Cat A premium segment.”.

And the assault from Audi doesn’t end with the A3. Following close behind are the A1 Sportback and A3 Sportback that will feature similar horsepower engines. You can compare these models using the car comparison tool on our website while browsing through Oneshift's comprehensive New Car database
