There’ll be an Aussie V8 rumble in our concrete jungle following the arrival of HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) on our shores on Thursday night.
Harvest Automobiles launched the five-car line-up from the Australian muscle car marque’s E Series 3 range – the GTS, Grange, Senator Signature sedans, Clubsport R8 Tourer station wagon, and Maloo utility vehicle.
All vehicles feature General Motors’ LS3 6.2-litre V8 engines with power outputs ranging from 317kW to 325kW (425 to 435bhp) at 6000rpm and 550Nm of torque at 4600rpm. Coincidentally, these engines are identical to the ones found in Chevrolet’s Corvette and Camaro SS models.
On Friday, select members of the public and media were treated to the HSV Driving Experience, where they put the GTS and Maloo through their paces in 0-100-0km/h runs and slalom courses under the watchful eyes of Australian V8 Supercar drivers Garth Tander and Greg Murphy. They were then treated to two hot laps of a makeshift track at the Changi Exhibition Centre in a Holden Racing Team V8 Supercar.
“I have long been familiar with Holden Special Vehicles, and when we were looking at expanding our line-up of brands I felt it was a great opportunity. I am very confident that the car culture of Singapore will be very excited about this niche offering,” said Mr Daniel Au, managing director of Harvest Automobiles.
Niche it is indeed – starting prices for the HSV range begin at $318,000 for the Maloo and go all the way up to $338,000 for the GTS.
Despite the steep prices, Mr Au added that Harvest Automobiles have already sold their first allocation of HSVs.

Years ago, Aussie V8s were racing together with all other touring cars, until one fine day, the Godzilla (Nissan GTR) came along and swept the whole track clean. Eventually, the Godzies were banned and the V8s were racing only among themselves. With prices close to the latest GTR in SG, I know which one I would get.
Saab dealer Trans Eurokars this week held previews of the new generation 9-5 for customers and the media.
The all new Saab 9-5 sedan signals the start of a new era for the Saab brand. Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab, it combines stand-out looks with advanced technologies and brings a fresh alternative choice to the premium sedan segment.
The clean, sculpted shape embraces the purity of Scandinavian design and its dramatic wraparound window graphic echoes Saab’s aviation heritage. With frontal styling inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car and a muscular, low-slung stance, the new 9-5 heralds the introduction of a bold, more expressive design language.
The array of high-tech features on offer includes: an aircraft-like head-up information display (Pilot HUD); adaptive lighting (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; tri-zone air conditioning; dynamic parking assistance and Saab XWD with a rear eLSD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system.
The all-turbo powertrain line-up available at 2.0 liters and carries forward Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy, which focuses on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient and relatively small four cylinder turbo engines.
“This car marks the dawn of a new era for the brand,” says Mr Karsono Kwee, Executive Chairman of Trans Eurokars Pte Ltd. “We are also pleased to announce Trans Eurokars will remain as the only official distributor for Saab automobiles here in Singapore. This car promises to be anything but ordinary. The new Saab 9-5 is sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab.’’
Forward-looking design that doesn’t ignore where it’s coming from – that sums up the visual appeal of the all-new Saab 9-5 sedan. The face of the new 9-5 is defined by a deep grille flanked with curving, ice-block headlamp units. The entire glasshouse is presented as a ‘wraparound’ mono graphic, the disguised windshield and side pillars giving the cabin Saab’s signature cockpit look. Squint slightly, and the proportions of the windshield and roof become reminiscent of the classic 900 model.
Viewed from any angle, the all new 9-5 cuts a strong and powerful stance. The ‘organic sculpture’ of the low-slung body blends clean, uncluttered lines with natural, curvaceous shapes. Brand design cues are evident in the ‘hockey stick’ belt-line, the strong rear C-pillars and the fuselage-smooth surfacing of the bodywork. The large Saab logo embossed in the center of the grille characterizes the more assertive, self-confident design language.
The car’s dynamic character is emphasized by a falling roof-line that culminates in sweeping rear pillars which buttress a slightly recessed rear screen. Latent energy is conveyed by fenders that are subtly pulled out to melt into the wheels. Below that smooth, flat rear deck, a full-width, ice-block rear light bar wraps into signature lighting.
The new 9-5’s overall proportions stretch the traditional three-box sedan silhouette, while avoiding the fastback cliché of a four-door coupé look.
Inside the spacious cabin, simple forms define its architecture and echo the design purity of the exterior. Compared to its predecessor, legroom is increased both front and rear. The choice of materials, the fit and finish and the tactile quality of the controls all reflect the new 9-5’s premium appeal.
The driver-focused cockpit is traditional Saab, while its execution is all new. The deep center console sweeps up at a shallow angle around the driver into the main instrument display, which is topped by a neat ventilation zone. Deeply recessed main dials include a rolling ‘altimeter’ speed read-out, a reference to Saab’s aviation heritage from the Aero X concept. Driver displays, including the optional head-up display (Pilot HUD) in the windshield, are predominantly illuminated in signature Saab green and have a crisp, floating appearance. The car’s ignition, now a start/stop button, remains between the front seats, next to the gear shift.
Infotainment choices include a top-of-the-line harman/kardon surround sound audio system or 9 speaker premium system. A large center console provides stowage and connections for several portable devices through USB and Aux ports alongside a 12V power outlet.
Rear passengers can access their own audio or watch a DVD. The rear seat entertainment unit in the back of the center console accommodates audio controls and fold-out viewing screens are installed in the front seat-backs. Wired and wireless headphones are provided for listening and viewing. The rear seat entertainment unit also includes twin air vents and an independent temperature/fan speed control for the rear cabin, in addition to the dual zone air conditioning up front.
An array of chassis technologies is focused on delivering a sporty, rewarding driving experience that belies the 9-5’s size.
Saab XWD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system, already available on the Saab 9-3, is offered with the 2.8 liter Aero.
Available throughout the range is adaptive chassis control with driver settings selection through Saab DriveSense, Bi-Xenon Smart Beam adaptive lighting and intelligent cruise control. Three different suspension combinations are factory-fitted according to engine power and are also available with a sport chassis setting.
Saab has some 30 years experience in turbocharging engines and the all-turbo powertrain line-up in the new 9-5 further develops Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy. At launch, the four cylinder choice comprises a 160 hp, 2.0-liter turbo diesel with CO2 emissions of just 139 gm/km and a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo developing 220 hp. A top-of-the-line 2.8V6 turbo, generating 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque, is offered exclusively with Saab XWD.
McLaren Automotive global retail network to feature 35 of the world’s best car retailers in 19 countries in 2011; further growth planned from 2012
McLaren Automotive today announces the city locations for its global retail network. Operating independently, but located at the heart of the McLaren Group, the company expects to confirm the names of the majority of its partners in these cities within weeks, with the remainder making up the launch network of 35 retailers confirmed through the autumn.
An initial eight retailers in North America (USA, Canada), 12 in Europe (UK, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland), two in the Middle-East, and McLaren’s South African representative are expected to be the first confirmed retailers in the company’s network, which begins selling the McLaren MP4-12C from spring 2011. A further 12 retailers will be announced through 2010, completing the initial line-up, including McLaren’s Spanish retailer, two further retailers in the USA, five more in the Middle East, and the company’s network of four retailers in its Asia-Pacific region.
McLaren Automotive can confirm that it will be represented by many of the world’s best automotive retailers in the following cities and markets:
* Europe: Birmingham, London, Manchester; Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich; Brussels; Monaco, Paris; Milan; Barcelona/Madrid; Zurich
* North America: Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Orange County, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tampa; Toronto
* Middle-East / South Africa: Manama; Doha; Jeddah, Riyadh; Dubai, Abu Dhabi; Kuwait; Johannesburg
* Asia-Pacific: Hong Kong; Singapore; Sydney; Tokyo
Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive’s Managing Director, said: “This is a landmark day for McLaren Automotive as we confirm the locations of the first of our partners that will represent us around the world. It has been incredibly encouraging to experience the demand to sell McLarens from the world’s best car retailers – in every country in which we planned to launch and at the heart of all performance car markets.
“We have proposed sensible, but high quality, expectations from our preferred retail partners and have been amazed at some of the proposals presented by potential retailers: nearly half are building brand new flagship showrooms.
“There is clearly an appreciation of McLaren all around the world. Aside from the obvious Formula 1 links, we believe this is down to our strong business plan, our exciting and innovative product line-up, and a focus on what is best for the retailer – sensible investment, and attention to customer service and aftersales, both in how we treat the customer and how we design the car. We will offer the retailers a unique focus on the customer, supporting them far more than is typical after a sale has been completed. We have a phrase at McLaren that sums up our attitude and appeals to the retail business: sanity, not vanity.
“We will also develop a global network that has fewer retailers than our competitors, selling a smaller volume of higher quality cars with more useable technology and performance; almost the perfect scenario for experienced retailers of premium high-performance sports car,” Sheriff concluded.
The environmentally conscious Volvo customer can now buy a diesel-powered, DRIVe badged Volvo V70 or S80 with CO2 emissions as low as 119 g/km - corresponding to fuel consumption of just 4.5 l/100 km.
Volvo's DRIVe badge is found on cars with the best environmental performance in their respective size class. In addition to the Volvo V70 and S80, the other DRIVe models with emissions below 120 g/km consist of the Volvo C30 (99 g/km), Volvo S40 (104 g/km) and Volvo V50 (104 g/km).
As before, the new 119-gram versions of the Volvo V70 and S80 are equipped with a 1.6-litre diesel engine and manual gearbox. They have a power output of 109 hp and maximum torque is 240 Nm.
Volvo's driveline experts have employed two techniques to reduce CO2 emissions from the previous 129 g/km (4.9 l/100 km) to 119 g/km (4.5 l/100 km):
* Intelligent battery recharging, whereby the control system only allows the alternator to charge the battery when the engine is operating at low load, for instance when driving downhill.
* Reduced friction for the belt that drives the alternator and air conditioning compressor. The redesign of the tensioner pulley and alternator pulley results in lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.
The reduction in fuel consumption from 4.9 l/100 km (mixed driving cycle) to 4.5 l/100 km means that someone driving 15,000 km a year will save 60 litres of diesel. Translated into carbon dioxide emissions, the saving is 150 kg over a year.
Official Introduction of facelift CX-7 is also on show at Mazda's official opening of their second showroom at Leng Kee.
Spanning some 19,500 square feet, the new showroom can display up to 14-cars & is better equipped to accomodate Mazda's fast growing model line up.
The Alexandra location also houses over 14,600 square feet of workshop with 17 service bays & over 17,000 square feet of new car pre-delivery preparation.
In conjunction with the official launch of the second showroom, Mazda's latest concept car, Kiyora, will be making its local debut.
Kiyora, which means "Clean & Pure" in Japanese is Mazda's next generation compact concept car. With water as the design theme, the "Nagare" inspired Kiyora boast state-of-the-art aerodynamic performance.
Equipped with Mazda's next generation SKY concept power train 4-cylinder 1.3L Direct Injection engine mated to a compact 6-speed automatic transmission and featuring Mazda's unique Smart Idle Stop System, the lightweight Kiyora achieves a fuel consumption of 32km/L (under Japan's 10-15 mode test- cycle).
Japanese driver is confident of his chance next season - most probably with Toro Rosso
Takuma Sato is confident he can bounce back into a formula one race seat, after departing the paddock with the failed Super Aguri team mid last year.
After some tests with Toro Rosso over the pre-2009 winter period, the Japanese driver made his first paddock appearance of this season at Suzuka last weekend.
A Japanese sports newspaper said the 32-year-old veteran of 93 grands prix with three separate teams was "job hunting", sensing some opportunities with the turmoil of the 2010 driver market.
Sato told the Reuters news agency that he is in talks not only with the new teams but also existing ones, and also considers switching to the American open wheeler series IRL an option for 2010.
"I'm putting the same weight towards F1 and IRL," he revealed, admitting his appearance at Suzuka was to ensure his face is remembered at a time when teams are contemplating their line-ups for the following season.
Is F1 in the pipeline for the VW Group? Apparently, it is...
Automakers appear to be pulling out of Formula One en masse. Honda canceled its participation at the end of last season, BMW is leaving at the end of this one, and both Toyota and Renault are reportedly considering canceling their programs as well.
But one major automaker is now reported to be closely considering entering the F1: the Volkswagen group.
Soon-to-be the world's largest automaker, VW stands as one of the largest automakers having never participated in the sport. Auto Union competed in pre-war grands prix, Porsche participated briefly back in the '60s, and Lamborghini provided engines to a handful of teams a couple of decades ago. But that's about the extent of it.
An official of the German luxury car brand Audi has hinted that parent group Volkswagen might enter formula one if the costs continue to come down.
Reinhold Carl, Managing Director of Audi Singapore said that while budgets are dropping, teams still need to fork out "well over a hundred million euros" for an annual F1 programme. "If the cost is lower, it will be more manageable," he said.
He also admitted that the gains from being on the grand prix grid remain vague. But get this: if VW decides to field a team, it would be branded either Porsche, Audi or even Volkswagen. No Lamborghini is mentioned at all.
McLaren F1 reportedly showing interest in taking in BMW F1
McLaren's Formula One cars have been powered by Mercedes-Benz engines since 1995, but that could soon come to an end. The relationship between Daimler and McLaren has become increasingly strained over the past two years, following the Spygate scandal and the automaker's decision to have AMG build the SLS.
With BMW withdrawing from Formula One at the close of this season, the hot rumour in the paddock at the Japanese Grand Prix is that McLaren chairman Ron Dennis is considering scooping up rival BMW F1's engine-building operations. Mercedes supplies engines to the this year's likely champions, the Brawn team, and a split with McLaren would allow MB to concentrate its efforts there.
McLaren's Middle Eastern investors reportedly support the move, which would allow the team to join Ferrari, Renault and Toyota in building its own chassis and engine.
Apparently, BMW's deal to sell the Sauber F1 team doesn't include the engine operation in Munich, leaving McLaren free to make its move.
The BMW M6 Competition Limited Edition combines the supreme dynamics of a high-performance sports car and the exclusive features of BMW Individual.
Appropriate modifications of the suspension further enhance the profile of this unique Coupé designed from the start for maximum performance.
New set-up of the springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, together with the body lowered by 12 millimetres/0.47" at the front and 10 millimetres/0.39" at the rear, together with a new combination of wheels and tyres, optimise both lateral and longitudinal dynamics to a standard never seen before.
The suspension control systems, the control unit masterminding the EDC Electronic Damper Control, wheel track and camber as well as the map controlling the variable M differential lock are all geared precisely to these special modifications of the suspension.
The colour concept featured both outside and within the interior highlights the unique character of this outstanding two-door in a most stylish manner, emphasising the motorsport technology and uncompromising premium quality of the car. BMW Individual matt paintwork in Frozen Grey metallic accentuates the powerful and, at the same time, exclusive presence of this unique Coupé.
The BMW M6 Competition Limited Edition is being built in a production run of just 100 units. The exclusivity of this very special model is further symbolised by a special placard on the roof lining bearing each car's serial number as a unique achievement in automotive technology.
The interior of the BMW M6 Competition Limited Edition is available in two colour variants. BMW Individual all-leather upholstery in Merino comes either in Black with light-grey contrasted seams or in twin-tone Silverstone/Black with light-grey and black seams forming a special contrast.
Merino leather comes on the seats, the headrests and side panels at the rear, the instrument panel, the trim cover on the driver's side, the glove box, the armrest, the handbrake lever gaiter, as well as the door and side panels. The door closing handles, in turn, are finished in black nappa leather.
On the twin-tone model the seat centre sections as well as parts of the door and side panels as well as the door closing handles come in black, all further elements are in Silverstone.
On both versions footmats with a surrounding bend in Silverstone Merino leather as well as door cutout trim proudly bearing the "M6 Competition" model designation add the final touch to the exclusive ambience of the car.
Offering a radical new frontal and rear appearance and available with an all-new Sports chassis, the new C30 looks set to capitalise on the success of its predecessor.
Major exterior changes
The front of the Volvo C30 has been redesigned giving the car a radical new appearance. Body panel changes, including the wings and bonnet, create a distinctive personality whilst closely aligning it to the S60 Concept and recently announced new C70.
"The front of the Volvo C30 has become more dramatic and expressive. The angled lines of the front bumper together with the new headlamps, which are drawn offset and up, reinforce the impression of speed and sportiness," says Fedde Talsma, Exterior Chief Designer at Volvo Cars.
In the grille sits the new, larger iron mark, as seen in the rest of the Volvo range. The air intake has also been enlarged and resembles the intake in the XC60. The grille also has a new honeycomb pattern, unique to the C30.
Although the biggest design changes have taken place at the front, the rear also sports a similar range of updates, including a new colour-coded rear valance that is available in body colour or, to add a dramatic twist, in a contrasting colour.
New expressive accessory styling kit
A new accessory styling kit has been introduced to give the Volvo C30 even more sporting attitude. The kit includes foglamp décor, a front skidplate, side scuff plates and a rear skidplate with an aluminium look. For D5 and T5 variants, two 90 mm tail pipes in polished stainless steel are added to highlight the powerful engine.
Matching interior updates
The new Volvo C30 also offers a range of new interior options. There is now an all-new colour combination, Espresso/Blond, consisting of a dark brown upper section and a blond, fresh shade on the lower door sides. The blond tone is a grey/beige colour and is an expression of Volvo's strong Scandinavian design tradition.
The Espresso/Blond interior gives customers the opportunity to specify the new, bright accent colours which include orange, green and blue in the fabrics, as well as a new Cranberry colour for leather upholstery.
"We want to give customers the opportunity to decide for themselves what their car looks like. The new C30 gives them a range of fresh, modern style cues in terms of colour and fabric to choose between," explains Maria Uggla, Program Chief Designer Colour & Trim at Volvo Cars.
New Sport chassis
To compliment the Volvo C30's new dynamic style, an optional Sports chassis will be available which gives the C30 a significantly sharper ride. The introduction of the Sports chassis means the car is lowered by 10 millimetres, resulting in a lower centre of gravity enhancing the driving characteristics.
The steering is more precise owing to the installation of stiffer bushings. The steering ratio is lower, giving a 10 percent faster response to steering wheel input. Spring stiffness has been increased by 30 percent to deliver a more dynamic ride. The dampers too are stiffer and are designed to build up pressure more quickly.
The roll stabilizers are also stiffer to reduce any leaning tendency when cornering. The new sport chassis is available as an option in all C30 variants except with the 1.6D DRIVe with Start/Stop.
Scandinavian design purity with advanced technology.
Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab, the all-new 9-5 saloon signals the dawn of a new era for the Saab brand. With progressive, confident styling and advanced technology, Saab's distinctive new flagship will bring a fresh, alternative choice to the premium saloon segment when it goes on sale in 2010.
The clean, sculpted shape embraces the purity of Scandinavian design, and its dramatic wraparound window graphic echoes Saab's aviation heritage.
The array of high-tech features on offer includes: an aircraft-inspired head-up information display (HUD); adaptive headlights (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; dual-zone climate control; dynamic parking assistance, and Saab XWD with eLSD: the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system.
The all-turbo powertrain line-up is the broadest ever offered by Saab, carrying forward Saab's rightsizing engine strategy focusing on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient four cylinder turbo engines.
There is a choice of three fuels - petrol, diesel and E85 bioethanol - and with diesel power, the new 9-5 offers CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km.
"This car is the start of a new era for our brand," says Jan-Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's Managing Director. "We have created an advanced and very distinctive product by leveraging the power of our roots in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design, sporty driving and responsible performance. The new 9-5 delivers in all these respects, as will every future product from Saab."
‘Forward-looking design that doesn't ignore where it's coming from', sums up the visual appeal of the all-new Saab 9-5 saloon. "We are giving a fresh, very modern expression to some of our classic brand design cues," says Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief.
"We have visual themes found in our recent concept cars, such as the Aero X, which are inspired by Scandinavian design and our brand's aircraft heritage."
The face of the new 9-5 is defined by a deep grille flanked with curving, ice-block headlamp units. The entire glasshouse is presented as a ‘wraparound' mono graphic: the disguised windshield and side pillars giving the cabin Saab's signature cockpit look. In this interplay of proportions, the windshield and roof are reminiscent of the classic 900 model.
The new 9-5's overall proportions stretch the traditional three-box saloon silhouette, while avoiding the fastback cliché of a four-door coupé look.
Inside the spacious cabin, simple forms define the architecture and echo the design purity of the exterior. Compared to its predecessor, legroom and shoulder width are increased both front and rear, with class-leading rear legroom.
The driver-focused cockpit is traditional Saab, but its execution is pioneering. The deep centre console sweeps up at a shallow angle around the driver into the main instrument display, which is topped by a neat ventilation zone. Deeply recessed main dials include a rolling ‘altimeter' speed read-out, a reference to Saab's aviation heritage from the Aero X concept.
Driver displays, including the optional head-up display (HUD) in the windscreen, are illuminated in signature Saab green and have a crisp, floating appearance. The car's ignition, now a start/stop button, remains between the front seats, next to the gear shift.
On the road
An array of chassis technology is focused on delivering a sporty, rewarding driving experience that belies the 9-5's size. Saab XWD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system already available on the Saab 9-3, is offered at launch with the 2.0-litre turbo and 2.8V6 turbo engines with further applications due in the future.
At launch, the four-cylinder diesel comprises a 160 hp, 2.0-litre turbo engine with CO2 emissions of just 139g/km and the 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine develops 220bhp. A top-of-the-line 2.8 V6 turbo, generating 300hp and 400Nm of torque, is offered exclusively with Saab XWD.
A new era
Defined and equipped by Saab as its top-of-the-line contender in the premium saloon segment, the all-new 9-5 is the most technically advanced car ever produced by the company. It will be built at Saab's home plant in Trollhättan, where it has been engineered.
The all-new 9-5 makes its public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show.

Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello emerges victorious at the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain.
The McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and his team mate Heikki Kovalainen might have qualified 1-2 on the grid, but it was Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello who won the 2009 European Grand Prix at the Valencia Street Circuit.
McLaren's Hamilton managed to come in second, while Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen finished third.
The Brazilian, scoring his tenth victory in Formula One and the 100th Grand Prix victory for a Brazilian driver, started from third on the grid and drove an aggressive and determined race to take the chequered flag in his Brawn-Mercedes car.
Team-mate Jenson Button came home in seventh place adding a valuable two points to his lead in the Drivers’ Championship.
Rubens had a good start and kept close to Heikki Kovalainen for his first stint, staying out for an additional three laps prior to his first stop which enabled him to jump ahead of the McLaren.
A strong middle stint, trading quick lap times with his rival for the win, Lewis Hamilton, saw Rubens get ahead of the Brit at his second pit stop. From there, he was able to control the gap and bring his Brawn-Mercedes car home after 57 laps for an emotional and well-deserved victory.
Jenson had a difficult start and was caught behind Sebastian Vettel which dropped him to eighth position on the first lap. He was then forced to concede a place to Mark Webber after missing a chicane. His chance to jump the Red Bull came at his second stop when a quick pit stop and a superb out-lap moved him up into seventh place to claim the two points.
After ten races, Brawn GP leads the Constructors’ Championship with 126 points with Jenson leading the Drivers’ Championship with 72 points and Rubens in second place with 54 points.
"What a fantastic day. I am so delighted with the win after what was a really tough race out there. It’s just amazing and a
weekend that I will never forget. Even after five years, you don’t forget how to win and the feeling is so good!
Although we were fuelled heavier than the McLarens, I knew that I would have to push really hard throughout the race. My engineer Jock was great today, he really encouraged me and helped me to maintain the pace, and the team did a fantastic job with two excellent pit stops.
I want to thank everyone who has supported me and this victory is dedicated to the whole of Brazil but particularly to my great friend Felipe Massa. I hope he is back racing against me soon."
"Rubens did a great job this weekend and he deserves the victory. It's been a long time so I'm happy for him although of course I would rather be on top of the podium. The small mistake in qualifying and a difficult start caught behind Vettel really cost me today as I got caught in traffic and it’s really tough to overtake around this circuit."
"Still we did what we came for this weekend and beat the Red Bulls, our main title rivals, so I’m not too disappointed with seventh position. We’ll go to the next race in Spa positive and ready to have a good race."
Mini owners in Singapore congregate to commemorate the brand's 50th birthday
Mini owners yesterday gathered to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the brand, and it was held at a grand scale.
More than 150 Minis – both old and new – gathered at the Changi Exhibition Centre to form the number “50”, which was a spectacle you rarely see here in Singapore. The formation began at 1.30pm, and finally at 3.30pm, the big "5-0" was formed.
With the assistance of Aetos traffic escorts, the Minis then paraded down the ECP, Beach Road, Orchard Road and finally arrived at Clarke Quay where a birthday bash awaited the Mini owners. At a specially set Mini corner, a Mark I and current generation Mini was exhibited, together with a timeline that describe the whole history of the Mini.
This was then followed by speeches from BMW Group Asia’s Managing Director, Mr. Johannes Seibert and Eurokars’ Group of Companies Executive Chairman, Mr. Karsono Kwee.
The event then went on with a Mini cake-cutting ceremony, and a photo auction that saw the formation photo being sold to a Mini enthusiast for $1,500. Proceeds go into the Straits Times’ Pocket Money Fund, a special fund set-up by the SPH to assist needy children.
The Mini 50th Birthday was jointly organized by Trans-Eurokars and BMW Group Asia.
All new Cruze heralds brand new design language for Chevrolet
Chevrolet today announced the arrival of the Chevrolet Cruze in Singapore, the highly anticipated compact sedan that is expected to redefine style and elegance in Singapore‟s mid-sized motor vehicle segment. With a whole new standard of refinement, design and technological enhancements, the Chevrolet Cruze heralds the introduction of a new global design language for the Chevrolet brand.
(Left) Steve Carlisle, President of GM South East Asia Operations, posing with the new Cruze at the press launch this afternoon
“We designed this car to give drivers best-in-class quality and an outstanding driving experience in the compact segment,” said Mr. Kittichai Jarusrojpoka, Managing Director of General Motors ODC. “Our goal was to set a new standard in excellence within the segment. This meant completely rethinking the needs of drivers, and ensuring that the quality of the car – from the interior to the sheet metal – was never sacrificed.”
And the result? A sleek compact that has a powerful silhouette. Combined with a relatively short rear deck, the Cruze entices drivers with four-door coupé-like looks - a first for this market segment.
Inside and out, Chevrolet's design team developed a new global design language for the Chevrolet brand, expressing traditional Chevy design cues in new ways while introducing fresh visual elements. The exterior fit and finish on the new Cruze exemplifies the attention to detail seen throughout the vehicle.
The Cruze also boasts one of the widest wheelbases in the segment, allowing for improved stance and a lower center of gravity that will increase the car‟s agility.
For Singapore, the Cruze is available with two 16-valve engines: a 107bhp 1.6-litre and 140bhp 1.8-litre. Both feature continuously adjustable camshafts (Double Continuous Variable Cam Phasing – DCVCP) to optimize the charge cycle for high output and torque characteristics, reduced emissions and reduced fuel consumption.
Buyers can look forward to two transmissions: a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic - a first in the mid-sized compact segment. The six-speed transmission offers smoother upshifts and downshifts than four-speed automatic transmissions found in competitor models, and improved launch and acceleration with a wide overall ratio and smaller steps between the six forward gears.
Launch prices of the Cruze starts from $52,388 for the 1.6 manual, $54,988 for the 1.6 auto and $68,388 for the 1.8 auto. Buyers can preview the car at all Chevrolet showrooms from 19 August 2009.

Stefano The rear really looks like Forte, but the front looks like the newer generations of Chevy pickup trucks... maybe it's the angle of the shot...
Autobots... roll out...!!!
18 Aug 2009
I think the rear doesn't fit the front. Front looks bold and intimidating. I think the rear lamps too big. Anyway, the reviews i read so far all very good. This will be a hit.
19 Aug 2009
The design is too Korean and the price is a slightly steep but i think it should be a good car to drive in
21 Aug 2009
Looks bulky... the bonnet is really 'thick'
22 Aug 2009
Interior looks good! But the power abit low, only 107bhp, as compared to other korean sedans like Forte and Avante with 124bhp and 121bhp respectively. And these 2 cars are cheaper.!!

The Cruze comes with a 6 speed auto transmission coupled with a very good sound insulation, well weighted hydraulic power steering and slightly heavier foot pedal. All these make the car quite different from both the Forte and Avante. The slow acceleration from stop and the lack of features is what makes this car lose out to the two Korea cars.
IMHO, those who drive conti cars with have no problem switching to the Cruze but not the other two cars.
The deal is expected to close by year's end and will secure Saab's future.
General Motors has confirmed it has signed a stock purchase agreement with Koenigsegg Group AB regarding the sale of 100% of the shares of Saab Automobile AB.
The deal is expected to conclude in the next months and will then secure Saab's future. Saab Automobile plans to exit legal reorganisation shortly.
The stock purchase agreement will be subject to agreed closing conditions. Conditions to close the sale include expected funding commitments with Swedish government support and guarantees, as well as transitional assistance from GM, as Saab becomes independent.
Saab is about to launch several new cars, developed with General Motors, that are in the final stages of development.

SEAT is preparing to unveil its most potent model to date with next month's Frankfurt Motor Show debut of the awesome new Leon Cupra R.
The influential German show, opening to the public on 17 September, will see the official debut of the SEAT Leon fleet's stunning new flagship which boasts a brutally powerful 261 HP 2.0 TSI turbocharged petrol engine.
Instantly becoming the most muscular production model ever to wear the trademark SEAT ‘S', the forthcoming Leon Cupra R matches the power output of the title-winning SEAT Leon TDI World Touring Car.
Naturally, the new Leon's 261 HP direct injection 2.0 TSI engine is the star of the show boasting not only tremendous power, but also easy torque transmission and remarkable flexibility.
Among the four cylinder 16V unit's key features is a new, high-pressure fuel pump injector to satisfy its greater performance demands while also allowing it to fully comply with strict EU5 emissions standards.
Transmitting that urge to its driven front wheels, the Cupra R is capable of prodigious performance. The zero to 100 km/h time, for instance, is a formidable 6.1 seconds, while the top speed of 250 km/h is comfortably adequate. All this, and yet the new SEAT's combined fuel consumption figure is put at just a shade under 6.7 liters/100 km.
Inside and out, the exclusive nature of the Spanish maker's new model is obvious to the enthusiast thanks to the distinctive letter ‘R' on the central grille and at the lower right of the hatch. The all-important initial also appears inside, on the right instrument dial and the remote control key.
Meanwhile, the exclusive Cupra logo graces the front bumper, the centre of the hatch and, inside, the steering wheel and seat backrests.
Further distinctive detailing which underlines the Cupra R's extreme nature includes arch-filling 19-inch, five double-spoke alloys shod with ultra-low profile 235/35 tyres.
The wheel assembly also enables a set of generous 17-inch 345 x 30 mm front disc brakes with 16-inch 286 x 12 mm at the rear, uprated to deliver the greater braking capacity obviously required to keep that 261 HP safely in check.
The interior features eye-catching competition-styled bucket seats in grey alcantara upholstery, white LED lighting on the instrument dials, a leather-clad multi-functional steering wheel and sporty aluminium-trimmed pedals.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been crowned Best Luxury Car at the prestigious Auto Express New Car Awards for the fourth consecutive year.
Editor in Chief, David Johns said: "Mercedes-Benz redefined what we expect from the luxury car class with the S-Class, it still stands out like a beacon four years after its launch...the outstanding quality, effortless performance and superb refinement of the S-Class just couldn't be matched by its rivals, old or new."
Since the launch in 2006, the flagship model has continued to dominate sales in the luxury car segment with class leading innovative technology and the highest levels of comfort and style.
Dermot Kelly, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Cars said: "It is fantastic to receive this accolade from Auto Express again this year. We are delighted that the S-Class has been awarded the Best Luxury Car title every year since we introduced the current car to the UK market, and it is going to get even better."
Later this year the new-generation S-Class will arrive in the UK, and, will of course feature even more safety and technological enhancements, along with improved performance and efficiency. The combined fuel consumption of the
S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is now 6.3 liters/100 km, an improvement of 9% and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 21% to just 199 g/km.
Standard equipment will now include Adaptive Highbeam Assist and Attention Assist while an enhanced version of Night View Assist Plus with pedestrian recognition, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist will all be optionally available.
The new Porsche 911 Turbo combines far-reaching innovations in technology with fine tuning and supreme refinement in design.
All key features of this high-performance sports car have been significantly improved, the new 911 Turbo combining a substantial improvement in fuel efficiency and lower weight with more power, even higher speed, and enhanced driving dynamics.
Particularly in terms of fuel economy and dynamic performance, the new top-of-the-range 911 from Zuffenhausen now stands out even more than before from its competitors in the market. Porsche's new top model will be presented to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show from 17 - 27 September.
The heart and highlight of the seventh generation of the Turbo is the new power unit displacing 3.8 litres and delivering maximum output of 500 bhp. The first entirely new engine in the 35-year-history of the Turbo comes with features such as Direct Fuel Injection and Porsche's exclusive turbocharger with variable turbine geometry on a gasoline power unit.
And as an option, the new six-cylinder may be combined for the first time with Porsche's seven-speed PDK Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (Double-Clutch Gearbox).
Models equipped with PDK are also available with a new, optional three-spoke steering wheel with gearshift paddles as an alternative to the standard steering wheel with its proven shift buttons. Fitted firmly on the steering wheel, the right paddle is for shifting up, the left paddle for shifting down.
In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo both the gearshift paddle and the PDK steering wheel with its shift buttons come with integrated displays for Launch Control and the Sport/Sport Plus mode, which are however designed differently on the two steering wheels.
The combination of PDK, Direct Fuel Injection and turbocharging ensures an unprecedented standard of efficiency, agility, responsiveness and performance, the Porsche 911 Turbo reducing CO2 emissions versus its predecessor by almost 18 per cent and therefore ranking unique in its segment also in this respect.
Depending on the configuration of the car, the new top model requires just 11.4 - 11.7 liters/100 km under the EU5 standard. And unlike most other cars in its segment, the new Turbo remains even further below the crucial level of fuel consumption for gas guzzler tax in the USA, the special tax imposed on cars with substantial fuel consumption. All this despite acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Top speed, in turn, is 312 km/h.
The Turbo driver of the future will also enjoy a further improvement in driving dynamics, detailed enhancement of PTM fully controlled all-wheel drive and PSM Porsche Stability Management being further supported by new PTV Porsche Torque Vectoring available as an option. This makes the car even more agile and precise in its steering for an even higher level of driving pleasure.
Sales of the new Porsche 911 Turbo in both Coupé and Cabriolet guise are set to begin in Germany on 21 November 2009.
The 458 Italia is the latest incarnation of the mid-rear engined berlinetta and will be unveiled at the next Frankfurt Motor Show.
While it's true that every Ferrari is innovative by definition, it's equally true that in the course of the Prancing Horse's history, certain cars have marked a genuine departure from the current range.
This is very much the case with the Ferrari 458 Italia, which is a massive leap forward from the company's previous mid-rear engined sports cars.
The new model is a synthesis of style, creative flair, passion and cutting-edge technology, characteristics for which Italy as a nation is well-known. For this reason Ferrari chose to add the name of its homeland to the traditional figure representing the displacement and number of cylinders.
The Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car from every point of view: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics, just to name a few.
A two-seater berlinetta, the Ferrari 458 Italia, as is now traditional for all Ferrari's road-going cars, benefits hugely from the company's Formula 1 experience. This is particularly evident in the speed and precision with which the car responds to driver inputs and in the attention focused on reducing internal friction in the engine for lower fuel consumption than the F430, despite the fact that both overall displacement and power have increased.
The 458 Italia features an innovative driving environment with a new kind of steering wheel and dashboard that is the direct result of racing practice. Once again input from Michael Schumacher - who was involved from the very start of the 458 Italia project - played an invaluable part.
As with every Ferrari, the car's styling has been very heavily influenced by the requirements for aerodynamic efficiency, as can be seen from the downforce of 140 kg at 200km/h generated by the new model.
The front features a single opening for the front grille and side air intakes, with aerodynamic sections and profiles designed to direct air to the coolant radiators and the new flat underbody. The nose also sports small aero-elastic winglets which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and cut drag.
The new 4499 cc V8 is the first Ferrari direct injection engine to be mid-rear mounted. It has a very low piston compression height typical of racing engines which contributed to achieving its compression ratio of 12.5:1.
Equipped with the traditional flat-plane crankshaft, the engine delivers 570 hp at 9000 rpm and, with an outstanding power output of 127 CV/litre, sets a new benchmark not only for the whole Ferrari range and the history of company, but also for the entire market segment.
Maximum torque is 540 Nm at 6000 rpm, over 80 per cent of which is available from 3250 rpm. Specific torque is a record 120 Nm/litre. However, what is truly extraordinary is the amount of torque available while still maintaining high levels of power at low revs.
The car's soundtrack is also typical Ferrari, with an exciting, powerful growl emerging from the engine before it channels through to the exhaust's three rear tailpipes.
The 458 Italia is equipped with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which increases performance whilst providing very smooth shifts even at full throttle.
This new Ferrari is also a major leap forward when it comes to cutting emissions. Despite the fact that the new engine is significantly more powerful than the V8s that preceded it, the Ferrari 458 Italia produces just 320 g/km of CO2 and fuel consumption is 13.7 l/100 km (combined cycle), the best in the entire segment.
The result of the engineers' endeavours? A 0-100 km/h time in under 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed in excess of 325 km/h.
The integration of the E-Diff and F1-Trac (now controlled by the same ECU) and their respective mappings is even greater, resulting in a 32 per cent increase in longitudinal acceleration out of corners compared to previous models.
The same ECU also governs the high-performance ABS, providing even more precise control over the logic threshold and greater efficiency. The brakes also feature a prefill function whereby the pistons in the callipers move the pads into contact with the discs on lift off to minimise delay in the brakes being applied. This combined with the ABS has cut the 100-0 km/h braking distance to a mere 32.5 metres.
to be honest, toyota has not much success in performance sector, of late, with the demise of Supra...

Ok...let's just humour this thought.
If the 'racing' edition design is nice...i dun mind paying a bit more for a nice body kit, as I have done with the Jazz 1.5l version. It is nicely done up, with good taste and a sporty look to boot.
Flip pages to toyota racing edition...my first reaction is that it doesn't look 'racy' enough. Anyway my feel is that the vios and altis look is so family...to put in cosmetic parts is like asking an uncle to dress like a punk kid and go clubbing.
No offence to the altis and vios owners...the cars do look nice if they stay stock...but the sports edition is really spoiling the look.
Fleet of 10 smart city vehicles drove nearly 100,000 test kilometers.
In August 2008, Daimler South East Asia introduced a first-ever test comprising of10 smart ‘fortwo‘ city cars in petrol and diesel versions to test alternative fuels in real life conditions.
Singapore was the only test site worldwide for this comprehensive field test and had been selected because of infrastructural reasons, governmental support and the country’s green initiatives and commitment to support green technologies.
After 11 month of intensive testing, Daimler South East Asia successfully ends the project with tangible results. The maximum length of the test period was targeted to 2 years – however sufficient data collected made it possible to end the project earlier which is a benefit in economically challenging times.
The test fleet consisted of 5 petrol cars ( 4 mild hybrid versions ) and 5 diesel cars. The test fleet also had a variety of 4 Coupes and 6 Convertibles.
The testing of the smart petrol cars focused on the new hybrid technology and the diesel versions on new fuels such as Jatropha plant-based biodiesel and Gas to Liquids (GTL) synthetic diesel fuel.
The smart test fleet was on everyday use in Singapore with the aim of comparing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The smart fleet had been specifically selected because the city-car concept was the most suitable application and standard smart vehicles had been already awarded with many environmental credentials.
To ensure the optimal use of the vehicles and to test a variety of driving applications and broad driving experiences, Daimler South East Asia involved partners to operate the vehicles, such as
- A*Star SINERGY Centre
- Cargill Asia Pacific Holdings Pte Limited ( two vehicles )
- Economic Development Board (EDB)
- Green Energy Trading (GET)
- Siemens Pte Ltd
- SIM University (UniSIM)
- Singapore Environment Council (SEC)
- Thyssen Steel
The findings of the testing were very encouraging. All vehicles operated well in Singapore’s tropical climate and city-traffic conditions, regardless of the fuel used. There was no change in engine performance and vehicle reliability. Apparently there are no visible effects when conventional diesel was replaced with either Jathropha blend biodiesel or GTL fuel.
The diesel fueled vehicles had a significant increase in output torque ( 12 to 17 % ) after the engines were run-in. The micro hybrid petrol vehicles had a slightly better fuel economy that the standard petrol car. Benefits in fuel economy are noticeable in extreme stop-n-go traffic situations. All vehicles together drove nearly 100,000 km in the 11-month testing.
Wolfgang Huppenbauer, President & CEO Daimler South East Asia commented: "We are continuously testing alternative fuels and various engine configurations in our Research and Technology facilities. We are proud that we can contribute tangible results out of the project here in Singapore."
"At Daimler, we take environmental issues very seriously and we pro-actively work towards improvements and viable and imaginative solutions. The Mercedes-Benz technology behind this initiative is reliable, sustainable and trend-setting. We intend to do more than merely reduce CO2 emissions – we are pursuing a holistic approach that extends to all relevant aspects of the entire life-cycle of a vehicle."
"The smart test fleet clearly showed, that driving an environmental friendly vehicle is fun and trendy. The smart fleet is ideal for traffic-dense cities such as Singapore and other global cities. For example in Paris, Rome and Tokyo the smart vehicles already enjoy cult status. We do look forward to bring other test vehicles to Singapore in the near future, specifically E-vehicles, as the Singapore government is encouraging and supporting such testing within their ‘ green initiatives’."

i think to be fair, tax rebates are there but it's the market forces that will drive the cost of car down. i blame the manufacturer for not pushing hard enough in reducing the price. they are just reaping the situation to their benefits. however, having said that, it's still business at play; who won't want to earn profits?
Sebastien Bourdais leaves Toro Rosso after German Grand Prix.
Last weekend’s German Grand Prix was Sebastien Bourdais’ last race for Scuderia Toro Rosso.
Franz Tost: "In Sebastien’s second year with us, the partnership has not met our expectations and therefore we have decided to replace him as from the next round of the World Championship, the Hungarian Grand Prix."
An announcement about his replacement will be made shortly before the
Hungarian Grand Prix.
Kia Motors has launched its first hybrid electric vehicle, the Forte Liquid Petroleum Injection Hybrid.
This move represents Kia's first step on the road to a greener future with hundreds of millions of dollars of research and development work now coming to the market.
Although the UK will not get this model, British motorists will be able to choose to buy Kia hybrid vehicles under the company's Eco-dynamics brand within three years.
The Forte LPI Hybrid is the newest addition to Kia's Forte family - known as Cerato in some markets and based on the cee'd platform - which includes both petrol-powered four-door sedan and sporty KOUP versions.
Kia Motors invested KRW 240 billion - approximately USD 180 million - over a period of 25 months to develop the eco-friendly Forte LPI Hybrid.
There is huge demand for LPG-powered vehicles on the Korean domestic market but in Europe Kia are working on petrol-powered and plug-in hybrids that are likely to arrive in showrooms by 2013. Kia is also working on hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles and already has vehicles operating in the United States that are capable of starting at minus 25 degrees centigrade and delivering a range of more than 350kms on a single charge.
Kia will be introducing the Eco-dynamics brand to the UK market later this year with diesel powered cee'd models featuring Intelligent Stop & Go technology from Bosch coupled to low-rolling resistance Michelin tyres that will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
Simon Hetherington, Kia Motors (UK) Limited's Marketing Director said: "Although we are not bringing this particular hybrid to the UK we are aware of the growing demand for better sustainability in the new car market and are committed to improving the choice we offer to motorists.
"The cee'd ISG models will be our first dedicated step here in the UK and Kia is committed to bringing a range of new technologies to UK consumers as soon as is viable. It will not be too long before we have hybrid vehicles but we see this as a step on the way to a fuel-cell powered future."
"This is the real answer to the problem of automotive pollution - even fully electric cars just push the pollution problem further up the chain to the generators. Hydrogen offers a real long-term solution to the challenge of individual mobility coupled with environmental sustainability," he added.
The Forte LPI Hybrid answers consumer demand for environmentally friendly vehicles that are exciting and fun to drive. Additionally, with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km, the Forte LPI Hybrid qualifies for billing as a Super Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV).
The new car utilizes a 1.6-litre Gamma LPI engine with an independently developed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and a hybrid system, comprising an electric motor, inverter, converter and 180V lithium ion polymer battery.
Forte Hybrid LPI System
Both the engine and electric motor are activated when the ignition is turned on but only the engine will run when cruising. When decelerating, the car utilises a special regenerative braking function to convert energy that is normally lost into electricity that can be stored in the battery.
The hybrid system is also equipped with Kia's Intelligent Stop and Go function, which automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is idle to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions. ISG functions when the driver applies the brakes after running the car for more than two seconds at speeds of six miles per hour or higher.
Another key feature found in the Forte LPI Hybrid is a Continuously Variable Transmission for hybrid cars which, together with the 1.6 Gamma LPI engine, delivers powerful performance and fuel savings. The hybrid-unique CVT is also equipped with a special E-gear (Eco Drive) that makes automatic adjustments to ensure maximum fuel efficiency.
Additional Eco-Friendly Features
The Forte LPI Hybrid retains the sporty and dynamic styling of the existing Forte gasoline sedan, a representative work of Kia's emerging dynamic design language, while adding aerodynamic elements to minimise drag and improve fuel economy.
The application of a front/rear bumper skirt, aluminum wheels and rear spoiler, in addition to the use of an exclusive cover for the lower part of the engine room and centre floor, result in lowered air resistance of 0.26 Cd, compared to 0.29 Cd for the petrol-powered Forte.
The vehicle's full-digital SuperVision gauge cluster relays critical information to the driver and includes an "Eco Guide" function which encourages the driver with an "Eco Driving Point" icon to adjust fuel consumption and drive more sustainably.
World debut for third member of sought-after A5 family on 100th anniversary of Vorsprung durch Technik.
Audi turned exactly 100 years old yesterday (Thursday July 16th), and has marked the momentous occasion with the world debut of the new A5 Sportback, a striking new five-door interpretation of the A5 formula that is a fitting testament to a century of boundary-breaking innovation in the fields of car design and engineering.
The new A5 Sportback subtly blends its additional doors into the sweeping curves that are instantly recognisable hallmarks of the A5 Coupe, and fully justifies their presence through an extended chassis that enables it to run the spacious A4 Saloon close on rear head and leg room.
The benefits of the increase in wheelbase length from 2,751mm in the Coupe to 2,810mm are also evident in the load bay, which with a 480 litre capacity when the rear seats are in place comes close to matching the A4 Avant. When luggage takes priority and the rear seat backs are folded down, a total of 980 litres can be freed up.
At launch in the UK, four advanced direct injection engines will power the A5 Sportback - the 2.0-litre TFSI with 211 bhp and the 3.2-litre V6 FSI with 265 bhp from the petrol family, and from the diesel range the 2.0-litre TDI with 170PS and 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 240PS.
Initially, 2.0 TFSI, 3.2 FSI and 3.0 TDI engines will channel their power via the latest generation, rapid-shifting S tronic twin-clutch transmission to the quattro all-wheel-drive system.
A six-speed manual gearbox will be reserved for the front-wheel-driven 2.0 TDI to enable the most economy-focused model in the first launch phase to benefit from the latest start-stop and energy recuperation technology.
Further engine variants and additional quattro models will be phased in during 2009, and the automatic transmission options will also become more widely available.
Sport differential hones handling
With their reduced overhangs and optimised weight distribution made possible by the latest generation chassis with front axle repositioned ahead of the clutch, A5 Coupe, Cabriolet and Sportback models are characterised by outstanding agility and composure, and these traits are brought into especially sharp focus in quattro versions enhanced by the new optional sport differential.
The new differential technology - available initially for 3.2 FSI quattro and 3.0 TDI quattro versions as an element of the extra cost Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system - enables the quattro system to not only transfer torque between the front and rear axles to counter traction losses, but also between the rear wheels to reduce steering effort and literally push the car through a corner.
The high-tech, high grip chassis can be enjoyed by up to four adults in the kind of meticulously finished surroundings that over the years have become synonymous with the Vorsprung durch Technik brand.
In addition to Audi drive select, the options list for the new A5 Sportback also features driving assistants including adaptive cruise control, the Audi side assist blind spot alert system and the Audi lane assist lane departure warning system.
It also includes luxury entertainment and convenience features such as a 505-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system and hard disk-based satellite navigation with MMI 3G offering even more intuitive control and further improved graphics plus the option to store MP3 files for music playback.

To continue contributing to the global effort to reduce CO2 emissions, Honda will remain focused on research and development of technologies that improve fuel-efficiency and will strive to deliver products with improved environmental performance to as many customers as possible.
The CR-Z concept car made its world debut at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show in 2007. The CR-Z sporty hybrid will feature advanced technologies that deliver enjoyable driving for all, while reducing the car‘s environmental footprint.
A new landmark has arrived in the city of Ingolstadt just in time for Audi's 100th anniversary.
The giant Audi TT was presented this morning in the grassy area within the Audi roundabout by Dr. Werner Widuckel, Member of the Board of Management for Human Resources at AUDI AG, and Mayor of Ingolstadt Dr. Alfred Lehmann.
The steel-frame construction, which has already been shown in Berlin, Beijing, Hong Kong and Munich, is 10.2 meters long, 4.5 meters wide, 3.25 meters high, and weighs about 10 tons.
"We're delighted that this car has found a new home in this prominent and highly frequented traffic junction in Ingolstadt," Widuckel said at the official presentation of the sculpture. "From now on, the sculpture will both adorn the center of the Audi roundabout and serve as a symbol of the company's strong ties with the city and region."
The large-format Audi TT is a true high-tech product: the model car's components include glass-fiber laminate and Neopor foam, and it features 150 square meters of painted surface.
Produced especially for the "Germany – Land of Ideas" initiative, the sculpture stood at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin back in 2006, and later featured in Beijing and Hong Kong, as well as at the Allianz Arena in Munich. It was brought by heavy transporter to Ingolstadt last week, and last Friday was lifted by crane onto its base in the middle of the Audi roundabout.
"The TT sculpture will be a true landmark for all of the drivers coming from Neuburg and Eichstätt. It gives the entrance to our city a modern face," Mayor Lehmann emphasized. He sees the new look of the Audi roundabout as a symbol of the Ingolstadt region as an attractive location.
Presentation of the sculpture is also one more step in the prelude to the "100 years of the Audi brand" anniversary celebrations. A major ceremony featuring German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be held July 16 at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt; on July 17, the band "Die Fantastischen Vier" will appear in Ingolstadt for the "Audi Rocks 100" party. Motorsport is the focus on July 18, when scores of fast cars from Audi's successful racing history will lap the historic Donauring circuit.
A concert in Ingolstadt's Klenzepark on July 19 will conclude the week of celebrations. The Czech Philharmonic Choir and the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Beethoven's Ninth Symphony; admission is free.

Balanced Driving Performance
The new Skyline Crossover achieves an exceptional balance of acceleration, handling and comfort through the use of a number of advanced systems and technologies, starting with its 330 hp 3.7-liter VQ37VHR V6 engine, the most powerful in its class. Generating 90% of maximum torque between 2,400 and 7,000 rpm, the engine power is light, smooth and easy to handle right up to the 7,500 rpm redline.
The 3.7L engine utilizes the Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) system to simultaneously achieve quick acceleration response, high power, high torque, improved fuel efficiency and SU-LEV certification, emitting 75% fewer emissions than the levels mandated by Japan's 2005 exhaust emission regulations.
The new powerplant is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Seamless, continuous acceleration and improved fuel efficiency and quietness during high-speed driving are realized due to the wider gear ratio coverage range.
Along with the responsive drivetrain, the Skyline Crossover features a highly rigid body and advanced suspension design. The transmission of road vibrations to the passenger compartment is minimized by a reinforced body with the highest level of torsional rigidity in its segment.
Advanced Safety and Security Systems
The Skyline Crossover features a range of advanced technologies designed to promote safe, pleasurable driving, including Around View Monitor (AVM), LDP/LDW (Lane Departure Prevention/Lane Departure Warning systems), FCW (Forward Collision Warning), Intelligent Cruise Control (Full-Speed Range) and a Safety Drive Guide.
The Around View Monitor system (standard on 370GT Type P/370GT FOUR Type P) includes a new Parking Guide function, which assists the driver when parking by providing a "birds-eye view" of the vehicle to help the driver see the vehicle, parking lines and obstacles. The Parking Guide can tell the driver where to begin backing in and steering with a birds-eye view and audio cues.
In addition, the Front/Rear Wide View Function allows 180-degree visibility in the both front and the rear providing a sense of safety in blind intersections. The Front Wide View Function Linked to the Car Navigation System automatically shows the front wide view when the car is stationary (at the map point entered on the navigation system).
FCW (Forward Collision Warning) warns the driver with a visual display and audible buzzer if the vehicle approaches too close to the vehicle ahead when driving at speeds of over 15 kilometers per hour, while the new Intelligent Cruise Control (with full-speed range following capability) functions across the full-speed range. Both FCW and Intelligent Cruise Control are factory-installed options.
New A4 2.0 TDIe combines 3.9 liters/100 km and 120g CO2 output with strong performance from 134 hp common rail diesel
The Audi A4 earns the right to use the ‘e' suffix that subtly signifies major strides forward in economy and emissions control as already proven by the Audi A3 1.9 TDIe and the A6 2.0 TDIe.
Available exclusively in saloon form, the new A4 2.0 TDIe joins the range alongside the three existing, and continuing, 2.0-litre TDI variants, and employs the very latest efficiency measures to make 61.4mpg and 120g/km CO2 output a reality.
Thanks to the punchy 134 hp version of the 2.0-litre TDI engine first seen in the A6 2.0 TDIe, the new acutely economy-focused A4 will avoid reminding drivers that they have chosen to give priority to efficiency each time the accelerator pedal is pressed.
Delivering peak power at 4,200rpm and a healthy 320Nm of torque from 1,750rpm, the directly injected diesel with its sophisticated piezo injectors will enable the exclusively six-speed manual A4 2.0 TDIe to reach 62mph from rest in 9.5 seconds and to continue to a top speed of 230 km/h.
Although worthy of many more ‘conventional' executive cars, this impressive performance data doesn't preclude an exceptional combined economy figure of 3.8 liters/100 km and an impressively low CO2 output of 120g/km in the A4 2.0 TDIe.
Of the acutely efficiency-focused premium compact executive contenders, the A4 2.0 TDIe arguably achieves the best compromise between power, performance, economy and emissions.
It does so with the help of numerous modifications and new technologies, principal among these being the latest automatic start-stop and energy recuperation systems.
Start-stop saves 5g/km
The start-stop system cuts engine power at idle when the clutch pedal is released and the gear lever is in its neutral position, and then restarts in just two-tenths of a second - more rapidly than any other comparable system - when the clutch is depressed.
With the system's help, economy is boosted and CO2 is reduced by approximately 5g/km, but if required it can be deactivated at the touch of a button.
Recuperation technology provides further fuel and CO2 savings by recycling a proportion of the wasted kinetic energy which is generated under normal braking and normally dissipated as heat, and storing this temporarily in the vehicle battery to reduce the engine load when the car subsequently accelerates again.
The achievement of ‘e' status in the A4 has also been helped by a five per cent increase in the six-speed manual transmission's final drive ratio, by the installation of a power steering pump which operates only on demand and by the use of low rolling resistance tyres.
The ‘e' model also conserves fuel by slipping more cleanly through the air thanks to an additional streamlining underbody trim panel, extra enclosure for the radiator grille and sports suspension settings which help to reduce drag through a 20mm ride height reduction
On-board efficiency advice
In common with the 118 hp, 141 hp and 168 hp TDI models, the TDIe also features a special instrument cluster with an efficiency-focused version of the Driver's Information System (DIS) which recommends gear shift points and gives situation-specific driver advice on how to optimize fuel efficiency based on sensor analysis of driving conditions and driving style.
The recommendations provided by the system, incorporated into the dashboard, have been proven to improve fuel economy by as much as 30 per cent.
