Drive pattern:
I do a lot of city driving so my mileage is typically close to the urban mileage ratings. The Forester does slightly better than that.

The Review
I love my Forester. It looks like and an SUV but handles like a sports sedan. It looks big but is in fact same length and width as a 3 series BMW. This makes it easy to park and a joy to toss around on Hong Kong's narrow, twisty mountain and coastal roads. Roomy and comfy (but not plush) on the inside. This may be the most fun-to-drive cars I have ever owned.
Strengths
Fast. Handles more like a sports sedan than an SUV. 7-1/2 inch ground clearance. Great Euro and US safety ratings. Huge sunroof. Convenient in-dash 6 CD stereo. Fully automated climate control. Good storage and large square cargo area. Lots of cup holders.
Weaknesses
Change the stock tires and get premium tires suited to the intended use of the car.
I was expecting to test drive a much slower car than a WRX... It's suppose to be one, but didn't felt like that!
The handling and the acceleration felt familiar... The trademark "All-Wheel-Drive" of a subaru is here, and when i took it through the twisty Chancery Lane, i forgot i was in a 1.5ton suv, and felt like doing rallying :p (imagine the sales exec and my other passengers stomach when i was doing this :p ).
I was told that the 2005 forrester comes with the WRX's TD04 turbo instead of the previous TD035. While i could not confirm this fact yet, the acceleration at 3000rpm did feel like the stock WRX that I was accustomed to. Yes, it feels good ;)
To be honest, the high CG did impair the handling a little, so that when i venture near the limits, i skidded a little :S . But i did not lack confidence when i overtook a couple of saloon cars on the bends. It's still that confidence-inspiring.
It's been a while since I last blast down a winding road on a WRX, so this ride really reminded me of those invincible times :p
Strengths
- Refined Boxer engine
- Turbo acceleration is marvellous for overtaking on roads
- 4WD handling on the nastiest of roads
Weaknesses
- High fuel consumption
- Boxy exterior may put some off
