Double Snoozle! BMW 4 Series Coupe Officially In Singapore!

Fans and detractors can breathe a sigh of relief as BMW’s much-anticipated grille comes to Singapore.

The all-new 4 Series which is naturally launched after the 3 Series Sedan, brings with it crisp lines, a wider track than the 3 Series (by 23mm); and wider by 28mm front, and 18mm rear than the previous generation car… and also its new, controversial vertically emphasised grille.

Christopher Wehner, Managing Director for BMW Asia was Head of Product Management for BMW's Midsized cars in his previous role, and had a hand in the 4 Series Coupe's development. The BMW Z4 was one of the other cars he saw through.

BMW’s controversial front-end, is intended to further emphasise the 4 Series as a stand-alone mode, further distancing it from the 3 Series; and pays homage to the 328 and 3.0 CSi. All models are equipped with full LED headlights, and BMW has also made their Laserlight option available; capable of illuminating the path in-front to a distance of up to 550 meters, and even dynamically follows the road. Great for those who love long distance high-speed drives.

Long doors, with frameless windows and slender pillars contribute to the 4 Series’ elegant appearance. The glasshouse – heavily tapered in its rear section, brings greater emphasis to its rear haunches. Leg space for rear passengers is surprisingly sufficient, even with the 4’s coupe form.

Check out that discreet camera placement

On being practical-a-car, the 4 Series Coupe also boasts a 440 litre boot, and 40:20:40 style folding rear seats.

You can expect a familiar BMW driver-centric dashboard, which now features a 12.3” Digital Instrument Display, with design elements seen in the latest generation of BMW cars. The new 4 Series Coupe also brings you greater connectivity and additional convenience features with its new infotainment system, powered by BMW’s latest Operating System 7.0. Beyond the usual touchscreen, iDrive and Gesture Controls, you now can access the infotainment with voice commands, activated with the phrase ‘Hey BMW”.

For those who may want to share the car with more at home, The BMW Digital Key for the iPhone will enable customers to just tap to unlock and easily get going by placing the iPhone in the smartphone tray and pushing the start button. Access to the car can be shared with up to five individuals. Interestingly, BMW has also allowed configurability to access intended for younger drivers, which restricts top speed, horsepower, maximum radio volume… and perhaps more things you can think of that they could get into trouble with… wouldn’t it be fun to say… lock the radio station to Symphony 92.4.”?

Other convenience features, like 3D visualisation of the surrounding area, are there to help you out of tight quarters. BMW’s Reversing Assistant which can be found, even in their entry 1 Series, allows you to safely reverse, following the path previously taken, up to a distance of 50m. Other elements that make up the 4 Series’ suite of safety features includes front collision warning with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning including lane return (with steering assistance) and the Speed Limit Info system are all now included as standard. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds a number of features including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant with new Active Navigation, which uses navigation data to detect any necessary lane changes.

For the moment, Singapore gets just two power options, both being 2-litre turbocharged engines in different states of tune, and mated to an 8-speed automatic.

The 420i Coupe delivers 184hp, and 300Nm, the latter from between 1,350 to 4,000rpm, and clocks 100km/h in 7.5 seconds.

The higher-powered BMW 430i Coupe, which is sold in Singapore with the M Sport Pro kit delivers 258hp and 400Nm from between 1,550 to 4,400rpm; and reaches 100km/h from rest in just 5.8 seconds. The BMW 430i Coupe M Sport Pro adds more to its already engaging drive with the inclusion of BMW’s Adaptive M suspension. A 1-inch rim size upgrade to 19” BMW Individual Bicolour wheels, and red M Sport brakes are just some of the fancy bits of kit you can expect as standard, while a Harman Kardon surround sound system not only ensures premium sound, but also feeds the car’s sporty soundtrack into the cabin.

At launch the BMW 420i retails for S$218,888, while the BMW 430i Coupe M Sport Pro at S$266,888. Prices are inclusive of COE.
