On 26 April 2021, Bentley launched the leaner V8 variant of their Flying Spur grand touring sedan, over a year after the full flavoured variant fitted their crème de la crème W12 reached our shores. The “easier-on-the-pocket” V8 retails from $919,000, sans all your bespoke options and COE.
At the heart of the car is the same four-point-zero litre twin-turbocharged V8 that powers their Bentayga SUV. According to Bentley, the Flying Spur V8 is one-hundred kilograms lighter than the W12 version (most of this we are quite certain, is at the northern-end of the vehicle. Bentley claims that this equates to a more agile and responsive drive. The 4.0 produces 542bhp and 770Nm, from just under 2,000rpm, and is married to a fast-shifting 8-speed dual clutch transmission.
To deliver improved fuel economy, the V8 is designed to shut one bank of cylinders down, when torque demand is below 235Nm, and when the engine purrs below 3,000rpm. The cylinder deactivation can be actioned in about 20 milliseconds, and is not perceptible to the Flying Spur’s occupants.
Drive dynamics are improved through innovations like its Adaptive Air Suspension, Torque Vectoring by Brake and Drive Dynamics Control, providing the best of either an exhilarating drive or a pillowy ride.
Customers who would like to milk the most from the Flying Spur V8, can opt to have the luxury brand’s pioneering the 48V electric active anti-roll technology (Bentley Dynamic Ride), and Electronic All-Wheel Steering for even greater agility.
The new Flying Spur V8 is available in both four and five-seat configurations, Apple CarPlay is provided as standard, and customers can also opt for the Bentley Rotating Display, where you can rotate between a 12.3” digital touchscreen, a traditional set of analogue dials or what Bentley calls, ‘digital detoxifying veneer’.
Buyers will be spoiled by the choice of seven body colour families available which break down into 85 paint colours to choose from; these are matched with seven wheel options and a vast selection of cowhide and wood veneer.
