Good Driving Etiquettes All Drivers Should Be Aware Of
While driving habits are often localised, safe driving should be part of a global practice.

Driving can be a hassle, admittedly. A planned route for a casual Sunday drive can turn sour based on unforeseen circumstances. Could they be avoided? Perhaps. But it takes two hands to clap, or rather, way more hands to work in sync for the sake of road safety. Driving etiquettes should be basic knowledge, but refreshers are often much needed. Let’s have a look at some key reminders.

Avoid distractions
Focus on driving! No texting, eating or engaging in other habits that pose dangers. Modern cars, we reckon, already have massive touchscreens - some of them with user interfaces more complex than desired. Use them only at a stop or at extremely low speeds.

Parking etiquette
Park within designated spots. Do not park your ICE car in EV lots, and if you’re driving an EV, unplug and park elsewhere once you’ve used the charger.
Respect pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists
Sure, it’s a thin line to tread whenever the topic of motorcyclists and cyclists on roads is discussed. But we do not want to see any casualties - give way and practice defensive driving. Pedestrians on crosswalks have no protection from moving vehicles - give them the right of way. Also don’t always assume that crosswalk lights will always function properly!
Stay calm
An underrated attribute we reckon, but we’ve seen drivers “evolve” into another character behind the wheel - more often than not they take on a more aggressive personality. Easier said than done, we admit, but please avoid road rage and remain patient.
Plan your journey
Set off earlier if possible, even if you fully trust the timings on Google Maps. There’ll tend to be road closures when you least expect it! Jams and road accidents can occur all of a sudden. Looking for parking lots will take time, too.

Use headlights properly
Some cars are fitted with fog lights and extremely bright high beams. Use fog lights only during low visibility conditions (Eg: flash floods). High beams should not be used aggressively!

Obey speed limits
Take note of school zones, watch out for zebra crossings and always pay attention to speed-related road signs. There’s always a temptation to speed up when roads clear up, but that’s when danger starts creeping in.
Keep a safe distance
Do not tailgate - response times are significantly shorter if that happens. A sizable chunk of high speed accidents occur due to tailgating. Always look beyond the car in front of you. Even in the carparks, do not tailgate at the gantry just to save a couple of bucks!

Use turn signals
Most cars are equipped with a full suite of safety systems, but do not take them for granted still. One of the most basic safety features, turn signals, are often overlooked. Not only do some drivers not check blind spots, they change lanes sharply without using turn signals. All of us have a part to play to make our roads safe!
