Citroën e-C4X Review: The EV for the Cautious Convert
EVs have advanced, yet many buyers still fear adopting too much new tech too quickly

Electric cars have come a long way from being rolling science experiments, but for many buyers, there’s still that lingering fear of “too much tech, too fast”.
If that sounds familiar, the Citroën e-C4X might feel like a warm handshake rather than a shove into the future.
It looks a little odd at first - French cars usually do - but the e-C4X rewards you once you stop squinting at the silhouette and actually drive it. Think of it as an EV for people who want comfort first, cleverness second, and chaos never.

A Fastback? A Sedan? A Lifted Something?
Citroën calls it a sedan. Your eyes might call it a fastback. And the wheel gap suggests it once applied to be an SUV. Whatever the label, the e-C4X has that unmistakable “French curve”- smooth lines, layered LED signatures, and a rear that slopes so long you half expect luggage to slide out on its own.
It’s larger than the regular e-C4, with a longer tail that grants you a generous 510-litre boot. Just beware though - smaller, loose items tend to roll deep inside, requiring either long limbs or emotional support to retrieve.
Inside, the vibe continues: Soft shapes, lots of black, and just enough digital screens to feel modern without scaring your parents, who still insist on physical car keys. The square-ish steering wheel is very Citroën, and the infotainment layout is surprisingly customisable for something so simple. A head-up display comes standard, which is always useful for keeping your eyes where they belong; on the road, not on whatever app you just opened “by accident”.

Cushy Seats, Cushier Ride
Citroën’s reputation for comfort isn’t a myth. The moment you sink into the padded seats, you’ll understand why French people spend hours at cafés doing absolutely nothing; they’re bred for sitting.
But the real magic comes from the Progressive Hydraulic Cushions, a suspension setup that turns potholes into suggestions; the e-C4X glides over rough surfaces with a “did that even happen?” attitude. Pair that with ultra-light steering, and you get a car that’s genuinely effortless to pilot, especially around town.
Rear passengers have decent legroom, but the backrests are on the short side. Anyone above 1.75m may find their shoulders searching for support, the way a tall kid struggles in a kiddie seat.

Performance & Range
If you’re terrified of EVs that slam torque into your spine, relax - the e-C4X got your back. Its 134 bhp and 270 Nm come on gradually, not instantly, making it drive more like a polite petrol hatchback than a digital rocket.
The 10-second 0–100 km/h sprint tells you everything: Perfectly fine for the school run, the commute, and the relaxed grocery run.
The 54 kWh battery promises up to 436 km, but realistically, you’ll see around 300–350 km depending on how often you sit in traffic contemplating your life choices. Fast-charging is brisk - 20% to 80% in half an hour - and there are built-in games if you need entertainment while at the charger.
Regenerative braking is on the gentler side but must be manually activated every time you start the car, which feels like a small ritual before setting off.

Tech & Usability
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto? Yes. Physical buttons for the air-con? Double yes.
The infotainment layout is logical once you live with it, and the digital cluster/HUD pairing makes key info easy to read on the move. Adaptive cruise control and lane assistance are proper quality-of-life features that elevate this little French number beyond its price class.

Verdict
The e-C4X isn’t here to shock you with numbers or seduce you with minimalist futurism. It’s here to make electric driving feel familiar — soft, calm, and strangely comforting.
If you want an EV that won’t overwhelm you, and you’re OK with a little French whimsy, the Citroën e-C4X is a charming left-field choice that makes everyday life feel just that little bit easier.
