The Skoda Fabia is a Volkswagen Polo in drag. We find out if the latter's distant stable mate is as good as the more popular Wolsburg version.

What we like:
pros
Cheaper than a Polo
pros
not worse off than the Polo in the equipment stakes
pros
strong performance
What we dislike:
cons
Not as good looking as the Polo
cons
doesn't have the solid VW badge
cons
interior doesn't feel as expensive as a VW's

Other than the smaller wheels, the Fabia is pretty much similarly specced as the Polo Sport. It comes with six airbags, factory fitted stereo, ESP and so on. In terms of safety though, the Fabia's four-star Euro NCAP rating is one less than the Polo's five-star result.

The Fabia is roughly ten percent more affordable than the Polo Sport. The latter might look better and has a somewhat more prestigious badge but for those who can't stretch their budgets for a Polo Sport or don't have the liberty to wait for months for the delivery of the German car, the Skoda Fabia makes for a compelling alternative indeed.
