The Anti-Town Car?
Infiniti’s entry-level model here brings urban-chic and urban-jungle together. No secrets that the luxury compact is built on the Mercedes-Benz A Class platform, which in the Mercedes camp, has spawned the A Class, CLA and GLA, which this car is most closely related to.
The 2.0 litre turbocharged four-potter is also shared with Mercedes-Benz, and is good for a healthy 208hp. Mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic, the Q30 hits 100km/h in 7.3 seconds, and the elastic torque band which begins at 1,200rpm, and gives you all 350Nm until 4,000rpm and lets you pull away healthily from most any gear, if ever you find yourself in trouble or, are in need of overtaking.
Steering feel is a little on the dull side, and communication from the electric unit, could leave you with yearning for a little more road feel. The beefy steering wheel though is great to hold.
Giving the beans around the bends, allows the all-wheel drive to shine, with the Q30 displaying very neutral handling characteristics. The suspension is however, although sportier than the other Q30 variants, is still tuned to deliver on comfort, and you will find that the high-riding Q30, can feel slightly unsettled after a series of turns.
Interior insulation is pretty good, and road noise is rather muted. The large rims, with 235/45R19 tyres also do their job in keeping decent comfort, although they are run-flat units.
It is after all based heavily on the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4Matic, you do get a similar drive, and the same drivetrain. At approximately $20,000 (13 April 2017) less, than its German cousin from a different mother, from a price point, it does open the door to a host of other options. But what may make the Q30 an oddball, might just make the car a unique proposition.
