At least now VW has a worthy competitor in the upper echelon of the small premium executive sedan, with the main players in this distinguished league coming in the form of its fellow Germans - the BMW 335i, Audi A4 V6 and Mercedes-Benz C350.

Despite being the second most powerful car in the lot just 6bhp shy of the 335i’s 306bhp, it compensates by being the fastest, the most fun to drive and best of all, undercuts the rest of them where it hurts the most – pricing. At $169,800, it’s still cheaper than the other three.

In summary, the R36 has a lot going on for it. It’s an excellent option if you want to be the maverick one who just wants to be sensibly different. But unfortunately, just unfortunately, the 335i still handles better and has more mass badge appeal.

Lets see how it will be like the next time around then…
