Volkswagen Touran Sport 1.4 TSI (DSG) Review: It's a fast moving world

They might have relatively puny, tax-friendly engines but there's nothing pedestrian about the way these people carriers shift.

What we dislike:
cons
Citroen: Ancient and slow witted four-speed gearbox
cons
dead steering
cons
lack outright body controlVolkswagen: Unimaginative styling
cons
not as spacious inside

The Touran's dynamic performance is matched by its handling capabilities - it corners almost as well as a Golf despite its height and the steering inspires confidence. The Citroen's helm in comparison is less communicative and feels less natural. The softer sprung Citroen also leans more in the corners but in turn, it offers a truly excellent ride. At cruising speeds, the Citroen feels magic carpet-like indeed while the Touran has that typical more firm, German ride.

At just over the $100k mark each, both cars are pretty much similarly priced and as well equipped.

It's hard not to be swayed by the Touran Sport's strong image, solid build and powerful yet efficient engine/gearbox combo but like most German cars, it somehow feels too cold and not as welcoming as the non-conformist and quirkily styled Citroen Grand C4 Picasso. It's a simple choice really - Style or performance? You make your own choice.
