Big fun in small packages

Big fun in small packages

Even with the smaller capacities and lower bhp ratings in Cat A, driving fun can still be found. Volkswagen recently invited us for a 1,000 kilometre journey on some of the best B-roads in Malaysia just to prove how much fun their Cat A offerings can be…

We arrived at our destination in Kuantan with plenty of time to spare before sunset and by then, both my road trip partner and I were thoroughly impressed with the big performance (not just in terms of horsepower) from the humble Volkswagens.

On the return journey back home the next day, we swapped our Passat for the Cross Polo. I didn’t have much expectations of the 1.2 TSI under the hood but it wasn’t long before the performance of the Cross Polo shown through.

When we found ourselves on quiet stretches of B-road where overtaking was a possibility, the Cross Polo did everything we asked on command without missing a beat. Granted, the slower acceleration of the Cross Polo required thorough fore planning before overtaking on these single lane B-roads but the stability and comfort offered by the mini SUV-esque hatch was impressive.

Not only that, in our informal rallying, the Cross Polo proved its mettle against Volkswagen Singapore’s very own ‘rally driver’ and came in second behind the Beetle 1.2 TSI at the checkpoint.

For the comfort, driving pleasure and practicality displayed, the Cross Polo would be my top pick for another 1,000 kilometre journey.

Whatever doubts we had about having a fun road trip with these ‘under powered’ cars have been well and truly expunged. And if this road trip was anything to go by, it has only proved you don’t need high horsepower to have an enjoyable road trip.
