During his visit last month, Oneshift got a chance to have a chat with Chris Kearney, the Vice President of Tom Tom. One of the largest companies involved in producing personal GPS devices.

OS: Has there been a lot of collaboration between TomTom and smartphone manufacturers? i.e. technology sharing?

CK: One of our key core competencies is our maps and content. The team at TomTom is continuously working on different opportunities. The partnerships with Apple and RIM are some great examples.

OS: Where do you see the future of PND technology going in the next 10 years?

CK: Our research has shown that 15% of roads change every year. As a result, it is becoming increasingly important to customers that the information we deliver is accurate and relevant to their journey. We see the future of PND technology as a tool that people can use to improve efficiencies and help to remove stress in their lives.

To drive the industry forward we focus on delivering the most up-to-date map with 4 map releases every year. In addition, we are now able to offer customer Free Lifetime Map updates on any TomTom device -.

OS: What are the most exciting upcoming developments for PNDs?

CK: We are unable to share details of any upcoming products that are not yet announced globally. However, TomTom is constantly innovating and exploring new ideas to improve the world of navigation

Recently , TomTom launched some exciting new projects including working with Mazda to offer built-in car navigation in their CX-5 model. We have also partnered with Nike to incorporate our GPS technology in the Nike+ Sport Watch GPS powered by TomTom and designed to meet the growing demand for GPS running technology.
