Market Watch: Check Out These Rare Convertibles In Singapore

Drop-top motoring used to be more widespread - this experience is as rare as hen’s teeth in 2025.

Conversations that involve convertibles almost seem like a passing statement in 2025. It might be the terrible weather discouraging this form of driving, or the sheer persuasion of family-oriented EVs with blistering pace that render cabriolets irrelevant.

But we beg to differ. Not only is it a lifestyle statement, It’s an engineering feat to make these machines flow so seamlessly without significantly increasing their drag coefficient. There’s active aerodynamic components like air curtains to manage airflow, multi-layer acoustic soft tops to rival NVH levels of coupes and even additional undercarriage bracings to improve chassis rigidity.

Should we even go to these lengths at the expense of dirtying your leather-clad interior? For sure, because some of these cars in our shortlist have engine notes that sound brilliant. To find a motor with a melody so rich in tone these days is few and far between; it’ll be better to experience them without any filter.

2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet S500

Waft along in a twin turbo V8 that produces 449hp, paired with a 9-speed automatic. The S500 Cabriolet does 0 to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds, but these go-fast figures are almost inconsequential when it looks so stunning. With the triple-layer soft-top up, you’ll get to enjoy an Alcantara ceiling.

Opt for the full chopped-top experience - not many cars can match its presence. Luxo-haulers these days tend to be raised SUVs, but this reminds us that occasional wind-in-hair moments form part of the charm.

1996 Jaguar XK8 Convertible

The XK8 Convertible is built on the same principles as the E-Type. Even though it didn't garner as much fanfare as its iconic 60s predecessor, when deployed in 2025 the XK8 is still a proper looker. You can even be proud of the fact that it's loosely linked to the Aston Martin DB7, since they share a common ancestry on the XJS platform.

First-gens (1996-2002) are powered by a 4.0-litre V8 and 5-speed automatic supplying 290hp and 393Nm. It’s not far from a classic plate registration, so keep your options open!

2018 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 Convertible

It almost seems like a flex to own a new high displacement car in Singapore. No thanks to multi-tiered ARFs, list price of chunky V8s can easily balloon way out of budget. A pre-owned version can be tempting, especially when American muscle is involved. Ford’s Mustang GT experience is dominated by the Coyote V8, with an addictive soundtrack at all commitment levels.

A drop-top version amplifies this attribute. This facelifted 6th-gen example comes with new shock absorbers, stabilizer bars and a cross-axis joint in the rear to ensure that it maintains composure when pushed beyond the edge of grip.
