The temptation is always there to own a car of the highest calibre. Spending hours on used car classifieds does no favour to quell this appetite, too. There are cars we’ve bookmarked in hope of driving them one day, but paying through the nose was never an option.

That’s the reality of car ownership in Singapore, where annual depreciations “rule” how we view cars from a financial standpoint. Primarily dictated by COEs, cars here are living on borrowed time. Still, what cars have you been recently eyeing on Carousell? Here are three cars that you’ve paid very close attention to…

2009 Mk6 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Depreciation: S$9,600 per year

The Mk6 GTI had an electronic differential to make it a sharper tool around corners. 3-stage damping was also a standard affair. Along with a new EA113 motor, VW left no stones unturned to surpass the Mk5. A tough ask we reckon, but in retrospect it delivered the full GTI experience - pace and grace in a relatively affordable package.

This 2009 unit is one of the first Mk6 that set foot in Singapore. The late noughties produced some of the most exciting hot hatches, but VW played its cards right here, staying true to the GTI’s all-rounded appeal.

2018 Jaguar F-Pace 2.0

Depreciation: S$18,200 per year

The Jaguar brand we once adored has been given a thorough once-over. Whether this works in Jag’s favour, only time will tell. Well, it seems like most of you are still buying into the nostalgia, and we can certainly see why. The F-Pace looks brilliant in this shade of blue. Slap on a R-Sport pack and it looks in fine fettle. 246hp and 365Nm from a 2.0-litre turbo and 8-speed automatic brings it to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds.

Propulsion is free from electric assistance - an attribute worth pointing out in this electrified era. Compact luxury SUVs are here to stay; snap up one in ICE-cold format if you can.

2016 Citroen C4 Picasso Diesel 1.6

Depreciation: S$8,200 per year

Not many cars fall under this depreciation bracket. Top it off with a frugal, yet torquey engine, quirky French aesthetics and documented service history, and we’re on to a winning recipe in the used car realm. COE for this Citroen C4 Picasso expires late next year, so those on shoestring budgets can even treat this as a smart purchase.

We can only buy new electric Citroens now; now’s the time to celebrate classy French flairs of yesteryear. There are close to 40 Citroens on Carousell’s used car classifieds now, some of them with even lower annual depreciation!
