7. What does the programme entail?

The programme will be conducted here in Singapore and will consist of a
foundational e-learning component, as well as classroom and practical training
sessions, stretching over a seven to eight month period. The online modules will cover basic marshalling knowledge, protocol, procedures, circuit information and more.

Different marshal roles require different training at varying lengths of time.
Because most of the modules are done online, the training can be self-paced to suit one’s needs. Generally, a flag marshal which does not require extensive
training, for instance, can actually complete the course in two to three whole
days.

Key marshals will also be sent to a number of overseas races, including the 2008 FORMULA 1™ Grand Prix of Australia. These key officials will receive specific training and practical experience in order for them to direct a race as well as to equip them with the ability to train others.

8. What would a marshal get at the end of the programme?

Besides a great sense of achievement from being a part of history, the marshals will also receive a certificate of appreciation. Student volunteers will also gain Community Involvement Programme points (where students have to chalk up a certain number of hours of community service each year). These volunteers will also be certified by the Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA) and will thus be able to participate in any other motorsport events.

9. Can the marshal choose the specific area they want to volunteer for, or will that be assigned?

The marshals can select the specific area they are interested in, but this would be subject to approval by the interview board.

10. How many "key marshals" will be sent to overseas races?

30 – 40 marshals will be sent overseas will be training to fill the key ‘Deputy’
roles at the 2008 FORMULA 1™ SingTel Singapore Grand Prix covering all the
required Marshals teams. These positions will include Deputy Clerk of the Course, Deputy Secretary of the Meeting, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Deputy Chief Flag Marshal, together with Communicators, Sector Marshals, Scrutineers, Grid Marshals and Pit Marshals.
