Same, but different

A modern day Porsche too common for you? A classic one from the 60s like this 912 could well be the one for you if you want a Porsche that is rarer and with added character. We kick off the new 'Rearview mirror' feature series with this 1969 Porsche 912.

The interior features the classic and simple original 911 dashboard that was used till the 1990s in the 993 models. The row of dials with the rev counter in the middle is a classic 911 design element while the thin rimmed steering wheel is made of wood.

The 60s style front seats are flat and don't offer much lateral support, headrests or seatbelts. The rear seats on the 912 are just like what you can find in today's 911 models - spacious enough only for kids. The car in the pictures have had a full interior rebuild hence its relatively showroom fresh look and feel.

On the outside, the 912 is the original 911 body in undiluted state. Its looks are pretty similar to the original 901 - the great grandfather of all 911s. The 912's silhouette, proportions and profile are pretty much similar to modern day 911s like the 1998 996 Carrera (the first water cooled 911 variant) shot here next to the 912, but the retro 60s touches like the chrome bumpers, chrome wheels, the slit-like air vent on the bonnet and the metal cooling vents on the engine cover give the 912 a more distinctive presence and style. The fully restored exterior of the car we drove just looked majestic and magnificent.

Without modern day luxuries like served brakes of power assisted steering, driving a 60s classic like this Porsche on a daily basis might be a chore but as week end ride, this lau tang will bring you style, character and street cred that even some million dollar cars can't match.
