The proliferation of new plus-sized cars in Singapore don’t seem to be on the downtrend, which comes as no shock really - there’s no better way to get more for your money than to actually receive more metal for your dollar. The Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback 50, Lotus Electre and even the latest-gen BMW 5 Series occupy sizable footprints on our roads. Judging by how the pendulum has swung to favour cars with wheelbases that cover continents, it's refreshing to discover that Lexus has delivered a compact luxury crossover made precisely for city hooning.

Not all massive vehicles are irrelevant. If they are packaged well, advantages will outweigh the pain of negotiating multi-storey carparks. Sure, we acknowledge that not all large cars are engineered for interior space - premium cars with unrivalled offroading ability like the Land Rover Defender 130 require front and rear differentials to pull it out of sticky situations. But if cabin space is what you’re after, these roomy pre-owned cars are right up your alley.

2007 Toyota Alphard

The Alphard has been around for more than two decades and has had countless revisions both in and out, but one aspect has stayed consistent - space. Which is why we are zooming in on the first-gen Alphard. No fancy gadgets, just razor sharp focus to create as much cabin space as possible.

It’s front wheel drive, so that eliminates the need for a driveshaft running through the legroom area. It’s based on the Toyota Estima (which shares many parts with the Camry) and the HiAce van, but it’s the influence of the latter that cemented its success for chauffeur duties globally.

2016 Mercedes-Benz V-Class

Some might be more familiar with the Vito, the cargo van equipped for commercial use. But the V-Class based on the same platform is marketed as a large MPV, which we reckon is a brilliant move if cabin space is your priority.

It has seen conversions to heavy duty logistical workhorses, ambulances, campervans and even food trucks. Imagine stripping these requirements in place of plush seats, excluding the need for battery packs. Lack of a party piece is, ironically, its party trick.

2019 Skoda Kodiaq

Flexibility of VW Group’s MQB platform is at play here with the Skoda Kodiaq. Basing a 3 row SUV off the same platform as a VW Polo still blows our mind. Skoda goes a step further by creating even more room than its direct siblings, the VW Tiguan and Audi Q3.

The Kodiaq name refers to one of the largest bears known to mankind - we wonder why! We took a more potent Kodiaq up North and it didn't disappoint - perhaps it’s time to plan for a family excursion with this more efficient, equally spacious variant.
