Volkswagen Centre Singapore celebrated the local launch of the Golf R with a driving event held last weekend on the start-finiish straight of the Singapore F1 circuit in Marina Bay. Over the course of the weekend event, up to 250 test drives were conducted for prospectives as well as those who had registered for the event on the company's website.

Those who test drove the most powerful Golf ever on site had the chance to experience and savour the R's 256 horses and 350Nm on the pit straight without running foul of the law. They also tried out the all-wheel drive Golf's handling and braking prowess at Turn 1 of the circuit.

The new Golf R is the replacement for the 3.2-litre V6 R32 and features a much smaller but more powerful force aspirated 2-litre four pot. It will form part of Volkswagen's new range of R cars over here and is set to be followed by the front-wheel drive Scirocco R in the second half of 2010.

Watch this space for a road test of the Golf R soon!
