Sometimes overlooked in favour of the other Japanese offerings is the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Interestingly, unlike other soft-roaders which have placed the spare tyre beneath the rear compartment, the Grand Vitara keeps a sportier and more "macho" image with the spare mounted on the tail gate.

Inside, there's enough space to comfortably sit 5 adults. With a wide body and flat rear floor, shoulders won't be rubbed against one another. The seats are wrapped in factory-fitted leather, and so are the audio system - giving the cabin a high-quality feel. The interior may not look exciting, but it's definitely meant to last the lifetime of the car.

It won't win drag races, but the 2.4-liter engine does a very refined job of motivating this vehicle. The suspension is slightly stiffer, but the ride is nevertheless pleasant overall. The 2.0-liter variant will probably be enough for most, but if you like the extra grunt and four-wheel drive, then go for the 2.4-liter. It's worth it, considering the addition of ESP, traction control and curtain airbags.
