According to Yokohama, the ‘S’ designation in its name stands for ‘spirited’ and ‘sure-footed’, henceforth leaving no doubt as to the target motorist group of this tyre – the performance-oriented drivers who seek driving pleasure from their cars.

Construction and AppearanceThe tread pattern of the S.drive is both symmetrical and directional, and it has an unbroken centre rib with four circumferential grooves. Yokohama is using its ‘Variable Angled Groove’ technology – which optimises the contact patch – on this tyre to enhance its traction. To keep uneven wear at bay, stress loads are made to distribute evenly across the contact patch with the aid of the ‘Groove-in-Groove’ technology.

A Micro Flexible Compound has been used in the rubber compound of the S.drive, enabling road undulations to be coped with more effectively, as well as increased wet traction. For a performance-oriented tyre, the sidewall of the S.drive is not very stiff.

Dry PerformanceThe longitudinal grip generated by the S.drive is very confidence-inspiring, the tyre holding up well against wheel spin under hard acceleration. The turn-in is good and the steering feel is quite decent, albeit a tad lifeless for a few degrees on either side of centre. Spearing down the highway at three-digit speeds stably is no hard work for the S.drive. The same goes for the braking, which the tyre copes with effortlessly – provided that the speed is not too excessive.

Charging into corners, the S.drive’s chucky blocks on the shoulder provide more than adequate traction, enabling the test car to follow through with minimal fuss. Should its limit be exceeded, it simply washes out progressively – easily brought back in line with a gentle lift of the throttle.

It performs just like how it does in the dry, though with lower limits. The S.drive does a good job of tracking straight and braking the test car down from speed, displacing minor water puddles with ease and keeping hydroplaning at bay. The only downside is its cornering grip which is notably reduced as compared to when the roads are dry.
For a performance-oriented tyre, the S.drive is surprisingly compliant, absorbing most road irregularities with aplomb – thanks to its less-than-stiff sidewalls. As for the noise, it is just what one would expect from a tyre designed to provide driving pleasure. The large rubber blocks of the tread pattern generate a slight but audible roar at expressway speeds.
With its strong performance and compliant ride, the Yokohama S.drive proves itself to be a tyre for motorists who seek driving pleasure from their cars without giving up too much comfort.
