Audi replaces traditional barcode scanner with "ProGlove"

Audi replaces traditional barcode scanner with "ProGlove"

Audi is going hi-tech in all directions. Within the logistics arm of the German automobile-maker, in Ingolstadt, the all-too-familiar barcode scanners have been replaced with the "ProGlove", a highly-innovative scanner glove that incorporates the barcode scanner on the dorsal side (the top part of the hand-glove). The implementation of the "ProGlove" is the result of a four-week test where the scanner glove was put through its paces to determine its suitability in an automobile packaging environment. Now deployed in CKD Packing, the "ProGlove" will be implemented in other areas of production at Audi. How the "ProGlove" works is interesting yet intuitive. To scan a barcode, the wearer simply presses his thumb and index finger together. The "ProGlove" is designed with an ergonomically optimised trigger button that is located on the index finger. The wearer doesn’t have to focus on the barcode because the scanning function is integrated in the natural hand movement. The scanner unit in the "ProGlove" then communicates with the receiver unit via radio signals. By means of the LED light, buzzer and vibrating signals, the wearer will instinctively know that the article has been scanned.   The "ProGlove" is touted to last through an entire shift before it retires for a round of recharging. The "ProGlove" not only takes logistic technology to the next level, this intelligent glove scales up productivity significantly. Without the need to pick up and put down the barcode scanner, the employee can save on hand movements. His or her hands will also be free to perform other work. In turn, on an overall operational level, working routines in CKD Packing became more ergonomic.   Hartmut Bartsch, Head of CKD Packing, said: "For our employees, the scanner glove is a real help. It makes them more flexible; they can move freely and can scan and pack the cartons more easily. In addition, with the help of the glove, we design complex logistics processes to be more innovative and more efficient.” Thomas Kirchner, CEO of ProGlove, said: "The development of ProGlove follows the idea that wearable electronics have to support the employees. That’s why we have developed a light glove for industry that is intuitive to use, and which can be deployed without any integration expense.”
