Audi Unveils a Luxury Coupé That Turns into a Pickup
Its interior can transform too and hide its own steering wheel and pedals.
Audi has completed teasing of its ‘sphere’ concept vehicles with the Audi activesphere concept, a four-door crossover coupé made to enjoy the great outdoors.
Standing 4.98 metres long with huge ground clearance and large 22-inch wheels, the car is like a breed between a Tesla Cybertruck and an Audi A7.
It has an autonomous mode which will make the dashboard, steering wheel, and pedals disappear - allowing a complete change of interior architecture. The car can chauffeur itself in this setting. If the driver wants to take over the wheel, everything that was hidden swivels back out.
The Sportback rear of the activesphere can turn into an open cargo bed (Audi calls it an “active back”) at the touch of a button – carrying e-bikes or water and winter sports gear. One would understand why after seeing where the car was conceived - at the Audi Design Studio in Malibu, just a stone’s throw away from the Pacific Coast Highway.
Like most of the future, there’s no surprise the activesphere is electrically powered. Built on Audi’s PPE modular chassis, there’s a claimed range of over 600 km and 800-volt technology for fast charging.
There is currently no indication when the car would be slated for production.
