Baby Fiat “due in 9 months”

Baby Fiat “due in 9 months”

The clock is ticking for the birth of the new Fiat 500, a retro-future re-creation of the much loved 500 that was popular in post war Italy, and popular here in Singapore as well. Like the new Mini and VW Beetle, the 500 will be an iconic little car for Fiat. The Italian car maker has already set up a website to create a buzz about its baby, and it has already generated over 14 million page views, over two million visits, and nearly 30,000 registered users.

It is quite clear from this massive internet promotion that Fiat is not keeping the 500 a secret, and one can get full exterior and interior pictures of the car. What is exciting though, is that it’s not just about the car itself, but creating a whole community of fans and cult status for the car.

At http://www.fiat500.com/eng/index.asp?intro_nick=
, netizens are encouraged to developed customized versions of the 500, suggest mascots (over 1,000 so far received) and even compose jingles (nearly 1,500 so far) and MP3 recordings for this car even though its launch is still 9 months away.

For mothers expecting babies at about the same time as the launch of the 500 on 15th September 2007, there is even a chance to win a new 500 if they register at the website (not having read the small print, I’m not sure if this applies to non-European Community mums).

So if you’re a fan of the 500, and want to get one for free, register at http://www.fiat500.com/eng/index.asp?intro_nick=, and join the “Baby Boom”.

If you want to see the classic Fiat 500 in action, watch it in action on Luc Besson's "Le Grand Bleu" this coming Sunday, 24th December on Central at 9pm.
