BMW Shocks at Shanghai!

You’ve seen the super-sleek and sexy Mercedes CLS four-door coupe. You’ve caught glimpses of Aston Martin’s achingly, beautifully sculpted Rapide. Your hunger for gorgeous cars like that led you to check out the jaw-dropping Porsche Panamera. Now, BMW has tapped us a little on our shoulders and have shown us something which would make even the most prideful designers jolt with fear.

A shock release at the Shanghai Auto Show, BMW have hinted, with the unveiling of the BMW Concept CS, at the direction which they have more than just some intention to head to.

The car, which will share the next-generation 7-series platform, is longer and wider at about 5,100 mm, and 1,981 mm side-to-side and about 1,360 mm tall. But, whether this tremendously exciting new model is going to be the next 8-series, remains yet unknown.

What can be expected, though, is that the top-of-the-line variant, when it becomes available, will probably feature a 6.0 litre V12, which will essentially be from the current M5 engine with two more cylinders.

Chairman Norbert Reithofer and BMW designer Adrian van Hooydonk emphasized that the Concept CS is still, only a concept. However, van Hooydonk said everything on the big car could be possible to put into production; and that means the low-slung shark-like nose at its front especially could meet all pedestrian safety standards.

“This is a purpose-built car, but it shows where the brand could possibly go,” van Hooydonk said. “Pedestrian safety standards will not impact our brand identity.”
