Bold Subaru WRX concept revealed at New York auto show

Subaru took the wraps off an all-new WRX concept at the New York auto show on Thursday. The bold design with sharper character lines provides a glimpse of what the next-generation WRX will look like. The WRX concept is wider and lower than the current car, with a black mesh hexagonal grille leading its charge. Deep lower valences with air intakes were designed to aid aerodynamics, add downforce and help cool the engine. Space for the new turbocharged engine and intercooler was created by adding a powerbulge to the hood.

To reduce weight and enhance the low center of gravity, the roof is made of carbon fiber. Slanted headlights with sharp edges appear capable of winning any staring contest.

Wheel arches on the all-wheel-drive concept are pronounced, while a shallow greenhouse adds to the streamlined yet sinister look, although we can't say what it will do for outward visibility.

The rear is topped with a curved trunk lid that acts as a spoiler. Large quad tailpipes balance the look while alluding to the power lurking under the hood. Subaru says the concept rolls on 20-inch BBS RI-D one-piece forged duralumin wheels with 245/40ZR20 Dunlop tires.

The concept has a wheelbase of 108.7 inches, overall length of 178 inches, width of 74.4 inches and height of 54.7 inches. Compared with the current WRX, the concept gains nearly 5.5 inches in wheelbase, is 2 inches shorter, nearly 4 inches wider and loses 3 inches in height.

WR Blue Pearl III is name of the paint color used on the concept. It's accented with electric yellow badging, brake calipers and exhaust tip finishers.

Exact powertrain details were not released but a statement from Subaru says the concept improves upon current WRX's power and handling.
