BYD’s New Charging Tech Claims To Match Refuelling Speeds

BYD has unveiled the Super e-Platform, which includes flash-charging batteries, a 30,000RPM motor, and silicon carbide (SiC) power chips. It offers 1MW (1000kW) charging power, enabling a 5-minute charge for 400km of range. The platform also provides 580kW of power and a top speed over 300km/h. The Han L and Tang L models, available for pre-order in China, will be the first to feature this technology.

World record

BYD has launched a "Flash Charging Battery," featuring ultra-fast ion channels that cut internal resistance by 50%. The battery supports a 1000A charging current and a 10C charging rate, both setting world records.

What is its peak charging speed?

It leverages ultra-high voltage (1000V) and current (1000A) to deliver 1 megawatt (1000 kW) of charging power, the highest for mass-produced vehicles. This technology enables a peak charging speed of 2km per second, offering an exceptional charging experience.

Comparable to refuelling?

The Han L, with the Flash Charging Battery, can achieve 400km of range in just 5 minutes of charging, making EV charging times as fast as refueling a gasoline car, which typically takes 5 to 8 minutes for the same range.

The Megawatt Flash Charging also demands higher standards for charging stations. Lian Yubo, Executive Vice President of BYD and President of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, stated: "BYD has self-developed the world's first all-liquid-cooled Megawatt Flash Charging terminal system, with a maximum output capacity of up to 1360kW. In the future, we plan to build over 4,000 'Megawatt Flash Charging stations' in China. Additionally, BYD's unique 'dual-gun charging' technology can instantly transform existing supercharging piles into flash charging ones and fast charging piles into supercharging ones. Our world-first 'intelligent voltage boost' charging technology is fully compatible with public fast charging piles, ensuring users can charge at any station."
