According to Audi, fitting the twin-turbo 12-cylinder powerplant into the current R8 would incur re-engineering costs that were "too great".

A report quoted a high-ranking official from Audi who indicated that the current R8's chassis would have needed to be changed in order to accommodate the larger V12 engine.

The Ingolstadt-based manufacturer also claims that they would be unable to recoup these re-engineering costs through sales alone.

That, plus the fact that one-third of R8 sales come from the U.S., (where there is very little demand for diesel-powered cars) was enough to make Audi decide that this project was no longer viable.
