F1: Bahrain Grand Prix review
For the first time, the Bahrain Grand Prix is held under the flood lights! Bahrain has joined the likes of Abu Dhabi and Singapore to become a night race, and what a race it was. Rosberg pipped Hamilton to pole after Hamilton made a costly braking mistake into the first corner on his flying lap. At the start of the race, Rosberg got the better launch initially, but Hamilton’s W05 lurched forward before the first corner and managed to outbrake his teammate, thus gaining the lead. The duo would then exchange positions several times throughout the course of the race, which lead to some hair-raising moments when the two Mercs were perilously close to touching. The dominance of the W05 is apparent too. After Maldonado flipped Gutierrez and caused a safety car, the Mercs pulled out almost 23 seconds in just 10 or so laps. It has also been the dream finish for most of the Merc-powred runners, six of which finished in the top 10. The only exception is Mclaren, where both Button and Magnusson retired as a result of clutch failures. Ricciardo drove a brilliant race to come home fourth, after an early race team order to Vettel to let Ricciardo pass. He made use of the team order and his immense pace to recover from his 13th place starting position. The 2 Ferraris rounded up the top 10. Meanwhile, further down the field, Marussia has regained 10th in the standings, after Chilton’s P13 and Bianchi’s P16(despite being lapped thrice). Caterham’s Kobayashi could only manage 15th in his underperforming CT05, while Ericsson retired from the race. Teams will now spend the next two days in Bahrain as part of the first in-season test, before they head out for China. Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
