F1: Hamilton wins at home

It comes as no surprise that the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have clinched yet another one-two. However, what is surprising, is the way the pair got to finishing where they are; both Hamilton and Rosberg had woeful getaways at the start, and the fast starting Williams of Massa and Bottas managed to pass both Mercs. The thing that came as the biggest surprise for everyone, was that the Williams were matching the pace of, or even outpacing the works Mercedes cars. This meant that despite both Rosberg and Hamilton having DRS on the straights, they were unable to pass. Frustration set it early on in the race, as Bottas, clearly the faster of the 2 Williams, wasn’t allowed pass by the team. By the time the team allowed Bottas through, the damage has already been done, and the undercut has become ineffective. In a bid to clear the Williams, Mercedes pulled Hamilton in for an early pitstop, and the undercut proved effective and put the Briton in the lead. Rosberg was brought in the next lap, and Williams decided to clumsily respond to the Mercedes counter strategy by stacking the cars, losing Bottas yet more valuable time. Right at the very beginning, the Lotus cars crashed, which spat the McLaren Honda of Fernando Alonso into Jenson Button, which rendered the Briton’s car too severely damaged to continue.

Back to the front quartet. In dirty air, both Mercs were unable to pass the Williams, but once they were released into free air, Hamilton courtesy of his pitstop, and Rosberg as a result of both Williams struggling in the rain. Raikkonen, who gambled by pitting right before the rain started, destroyed his tyres and the Pirelli rubber was rendered useless when the rain actually fell.

The biggest winner in the rain malarkey was Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. The German boxed several seconds after Hamilton, which allowed him to fly through the pack to P3.

Both Williams finished P4 and 5, in front of the highest placed Red Bull driver, Danii Kyvat, in P6, with Hulkenburg, Raikkonen, Perez and Alonso closing out the last few points paying positions. The 10th place finish gave Alonso his first points of the season.
