F1: Kobayashi not penalised for crash

The Australian Grand Prix ended shortly after it started for Kobayashi and Massa as they were involved in a massive shunt. The Japanese driver escaped penalties after the team and the stewards found out the crash was attributed to a rear brake failure on the Caterham. Initially, Kobayashi blamed the crash on cold tyres and brakes after the additional formation lap, caused by Jule Bianchi’s stalled Marussia. With Williams being earmarked as a serious title contender this season, it is no wonder that the former Ferrari man was furious about the crash, with him even comparing the crash to Grosjean’s massive pileup at Spa in 2012. Ericsson, Kobayashi’s rookie teammate, retired before the end of the race, not before showing the CT05’s pace. Massa’s teammate Bottas on the other hand, showed how competitive the car was. Despite starting 15th, working his way up the field, crashing with the wall and pitting for fresh rubber as a result of the puncture, he still managed to finish 6th behind the F14-T of Fernando Alonso.           Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
