F1: Relative silence on Day 1 of Jerez Test

F1: Relative silence on Day 1 of Jerez Test The Pit Lane at Jerez was surprising quiet, considering that it was Day 1 of testing for the F1 boys. Just as a few drivers predicted, running will be extremely limited, as teams come to grip with the new engines and struggle to get the car to work reliably. We already know that Lotus will be missing the Jerez Test, and it looks to us that Marussia may miss the first few days of the Jerez Test too; rumours are circulating that Marussia’s 2014 challenger has just left the UK. The first car out on track was the Mercedes W05 of Lewis Hamilton. He drove 18 laps, setting the fastest lap at that time, before a high speed front wing failure sent him straight into the tyre wall at the first corner. Raikkonen set out in his F14T to do some laps, only for his car to break down 5 corners into the first lap. After being brought back in and mended, it was sent out again, and Kimi smashed Lewis’s laptime. As for the Red Bulls, their cars were tucked away after the launch, as the mechanics scramble to get the car running in time for the test. The RB10 first embraced the tarmac at 16:45pm(23:45pm SGT), with Vettel behind the wheel. The car was on an installation lap, and he then proceeded to do two more, but failed to set a timed lap. Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull aren’t the only ones struggling. Mclaren and Williams are as well. The Mclaren MP4-29 suffered from electrical problems that pretty much bound it to the garage, while the mechanics work on it. Same story with Williams, although they managed to get their car running with an hour to spare.

As for Caterham, their scheduled launch was pushed back as they battled technical problems. They eventually launched their car in the evening, which lacks the phallic/vacuum cleaner-seaque fronts of their rivals, with the boffins instead choosing to strap on what appears to be a box in front of a stepped nose.

Jerez test Day 1:

1. Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:27.104, 31 laps.
2. Hamilton, Mercedes, 1:27.820, 18 laps.

6. Gutierrez, Sauber, 1:42.257, 7 laps.
7. Vettel, Red Bull, No time, 3 laps.
