GM wins LA Autoshow design challenge

An eco-friendly Hummer SUV may be hard to imagine, but that’s exactly what designers at GM’s Advanced Design Studios in Los Angeles proposed for the LA Autoshow design challenge. In fact, the Hummer 02 took home the first prize for the design challenge, which was to design a futuristic eco-friendly vehicle for the year 2015.

One of the most innovative aspects of the Hummer 02 must be the use of algae-filled bodypanels, which act like leaves and provide photosynthesis. According to Frank Saucedo, director, GM Advanced Design in California, speaks about the concept behind the design, “Most vehicles in L.A. spend 95 percent of their time outdoors subjected to sunlight, so why couldn’t a vehicle give back?” In the case of the Hummer 02 – the body panels produce oxygen!

This ‘green’ Hummer is 100percent recyclable and makes use of hydrogen-powered fuel-cells with electric motors in each wheel.

GM has developed a website for the cars it has launched at LA, featuring the Hummer 02, and other ‘green’ vehicles such as the hybrid Saturn Aura and fuel-cell prototypes such as the GM Sequel and Equinox: http://www.gm.com/company/gm_exp_live/events/la_dec2006/index_flash.html
