Maserati limo goes fully-auto

When Maserati re-launched the Quattroporte in 2003, everyone got excited – finally there is a classy, elegant and sporty limousine to rival established marques like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. Now that the Quattroporte has been launched with a fully-automatic transmission, making it even more of a threat to the Germans.

The Quattroporte (which means four doors in Italian) has had quite an illustrious history, and in the 1960s, it was the fastest 4-door sedan in the world. Maserati launched second and third generation models in the 80s and 90s, but it was not until the present Pininfarina designed model that the Quattroporte posed a real threat to the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar.

In keeping with its sporting heritage, the Quattroporte was launched with a semi-automatic DuoSelect gearbox coupled to its 400bhp 4.2-litre V8. This meant that it appealed more to those that enjoyed driving than mainstream S-Class and 7 Series owners. Developing the Automatica has taken a bit of time because the Quattroporte has its gearbox mounted in the rear transaxle, allowing the it to maintain its 49% front and 51% rear weight balance.

Now that the 6-speed Automtica version has been launched, there should be no stopping Quattroporte from muscling itself into the luxury car market.
