New Beetle is now 10 years old and counting...
Mexico and the board of management at Volkswagen celebrated the tenth anniversary of the new VW Beetle today.

One million of these iconic cars have been built in Mexico, the exclusive manufacturing hub of the new Beetle, since 1998. Not exactly figures to shout about, considering MINI, Beetle’s main iconic car rival, hit one million units within six years of introduction.
The new Beetle was not the instant hit it was initially expected to be, despite massive publicity generated by VW itself, as well as other fan entities like Hollywood.
Nevertheless an average production schedule of 100,000 per year is not exactly bad either. The Mexican plant is also slated to produce the next generation Beetle, though no firm dates have been announced.
